Hi
I have been fortunate to have recently bought an early Merlin BTH Magneto for my Merlin II
With it came what I thought may be a boost coil, but it’s not, I,m not sure what it is, it has an alloy casing with no marks on at all, and inside has at least two condensers of the type you would find in an old distributor.
Any ideas ?

Thanks all, so, yes, it’s a type of suppressor
Hoping that someone will recognise the type and mounting now……
Cheers

There’s a rectangular cast alloy box about 8in x 6in mounted on the engine bearers on the Spitfire Merlin installation called a P-type suppressor. It also is filled with condensers like those in your pic so maybe yours is from another type of engine installation, tdp.
Anon.

That’s what it looks like. A couple of capacitors and chokes to suppress mains borne interference.

You don’t think it is a filter to cut out unwanted noise on radios etc? You have similar on alternators?

BTW
If anyone recognises the BTH mag in my photo, and has another ‘on the shelf’ I’m looking for another.
Thank you
Jules
