What's to see in Manchester

I used to live just up the hill from there, and I’m sorry to report that it was cleared out many years ago. 🙁

There’s not a lot, to be honest. Especially since the OP isn’t all that interested in civil stuff.

There’s the Vulcan at Woodford (which isn’t accessible to the public), I suppose, but apart from that you’d be struggling.

I’d visit the MOSI, then have a good gawp at the nearby Spinningfields redevelopment (is that what you had in mind, old shape?) and then wander into a bar in the Northern Quarter or visit one of the old pubs in Exchange Square.

I was thinking the “Museum” at Woodford, for AVRO stuff. Or the scrapyard at Failsworth if it still has the military A/c there. Or, if the conference is way out in Cheshire then Jodrell Bank is a good day out….but not Aerobits related.
There used to be some WW2 wrecks in the hills up Glossop way too. If the conference is near the Trafford Centre there’s only Barton (No military). Chorlton/Stretford has Hough End fields, the original Airport/drome…..it’s 22 footy pitches now, don’t think there is anything left of the original.
None of the above is as good as the Muze as mentioned.

My wife is shortly going to a conference in Manchester and I thought I’d go up as well. But as I don’t work for her firm I will have a day to spend there. So what is there in that city, or the outskirts, that will interest an aviation fan?

The airport? That is a good place for an aviation fan I would have thought. I used to enjoy catching the train to Manny Airport for a day’s photographing the planes, going spotting is something I have missed this year. 🙁

I was up visiting friends today and had lunch at Spinningfields, just a short walk towards the town centre from MOSI. All new buildings, wide range of cafes with continental style outdoor eating space. Worth a look if you want a wider choice than the cafe in the museum.

EDIT – that’s spooky, we both thought of Spinningfields at the same time, must be worth a look!

If in the sticks, there could be other aviation related stuff to see.

Is the conference in the City Centre or in the Sticks?
The City itself is worth a walk round. The new architecture is stunning (I know you wanted Aero-stuff)
If in the sticks, there could be other aviation related stuff to see.

The MOSI really is a cracking place.

The last time I went, there were Cybermen stomping around and scaring the kiddywinks.

The Museum Of Science And Industry on Liverpool Rd has an entire hall devoted to aviation, and entrance is free.

There’s a fair-sized airport a few miles down the M56, too. 🙂

Wow! That sounds good. I was about to add to my previous post that I am not interested in civil aviation. I’ve flown out of Ringway a few times.

There’s a fair-sized airport, complete with Viewing Park, a few miles down the M56, too. 🙂
