Good chance of a 767 or 777 easing the backlog then ?

True, they had been combining a lot of the shuttle flights it would seem yesterday, 2 flights merged into just the one.

Havent had probs with storms round these parts, but had bad fog on Monday. My mum and dad were flying to Prague Monday morning with Jet2, luckily the only flights that were on time that morning were the Jet2 flights from Belfast,Malaga,Nice,Amsterdam and Prague!

THe backlog must be huge! That’s a bad delay, you may as well drive in the time that has been delayed for! 😮

massive thunderstorms in swindon lightning every few seconds and thunder sounding like concorde taking off, Also flash flooding and v.high winds the rain and wind combined caused visibility to go down to 10m here.

Departed Belfast in some very nice weather today, and hit some severe turbulence over Liverpool, the kind that makes the entire cabin shut up for the duration of the flight! I did my best to reassure people but it was without a doubt the worst I have ever encountered. It kind of got better approaching Luton, but the visibility was shocking!

Have just found out that Heathrow was shut for a little over an hour this afternoon too, vis was too far below minimums.

Go on give us a translation

A bit of googling produced this site, which explains the European METAR/TAF terminology http://www.bobrathbone.com/taf_metar_decodes.htm

The figures you see in these METARS are general horizontal visibilities in the vicinity of the aerodrome, a bit like your “10 statute miles” type figures.

Andy

Thanks for the clarification. 🙂 It all makes sense now.

Also thanks Moondance.

We preface the visibility with RVR (Runway visibility range) in the states and give the distances in feet.

Ah, but we have RVRs as well, and these appear in the METARs when the vis is below a certain level (1000 meters, I think – can’t be precise because I don’t tend to fly the PA-28 in vis that low!), and where there’s measuring equipment of course. The figures you see in these METARS are general horizontal visibilities in the vicinity of the aerodrome, a bit like your “10 statute miles” type figures.

What about the remarks? RETS RERA NOSIG=

RETS = Recent Thunderstorm
RERA = Recent Rain
NOSIG = No Significant Change

9999, 3000W and 5000 are the reported visibilities in meters (it never goes above 9999 which is 10 kilometers or more), and the W means the minimum vis of 3000 is to the west of the airport.

It’s all down to the polar jet stream in the upper Troposphere not playing ball and allowing the Azores high to settle our weather system you know?

London TV News at 18.30 showed the A40 and North Circular roads blocked by flooding around Acton and White City (West London) Mostly underpasses and the Underground. Perhaps LHRs tunnel too?

There are a few differences compared to the US METAR. I don’t know what the 9999 or 3000W means after the variable wind direction or what the notes mean at the end.
