Probably been asked before, but what the heck. Sitting in traffic today, I did the usual, which was drift off into the great what if, trying to decide if I had the money, what warbird would I want to own, restore etc.
SO. Limiting it to just one choice. Which bird would you go after?
Even though my list is often long, I keep coming back to one.
Spit XII EN224. Yes I know, that lots of the parts would be Seafire XV bits and that not much of it would be actual EN224, but it would be an XII and I’ve loved that kite for almost 25 years now.
So it’s EN224 restored in the markings it wore with 41 Squadron EB-L, May 1944

My favourite Kite would be one of those stunt ones with the multi control cables with lots of pretty tassles and things 🙂 🙂
You’d never get that of the ground either, and you’d put the tassles in your hair.

I have the shots of JEJ*, three in a row, and another shot, in last week, with a mini set of JEJ up near the cockpit. The latter destined for a new 2nd TAF Book out shortly.Mark
I also have two photos of MV268 as JEJ* – one taken at B.78 Eindhoven, just after JEJ had arrived and another photo of a group of XIV’s at an airfield somewhere in Holland or Germany from the debris. MV268 was collected from Dunsfold on 29 March 1945 by Sgt Ronny Ashman of 130 (Punjab) Squadron, who mentions it in his book “Spitfire – against the odds” – “No doubt MV268 was snapped up by a brass-hat after some of the boys had tried her out. She never wore 130 Squadron’s identification letters of AP which would normally be painted on her, and I never saw her again.” JEJ joined 125 Wing on 28 March 1945 “125 Wing ORB 28/3/45 W/Cdr Johnny Johnson, D.S.O., D.F.C., assumed command of the Wing vice G/Capt Scott-Malden who is leaving to take up another appointment.” – cheers – Allan

I hear ya, Will! 🙂
An AEW version with Suez crisis stripes would be awesome for the 50th anniversary next year!

On the subject of Skyraiders, if Yeovilton could spare one of their two stored AEW versions that would have to be my choice for a restoration. Any Skyraider display is always fantastic, and a rare version with roundels (flying a lazy, noisy climbing roll, anybody who was at legends will understand!) would be a bonus!

My dream aircraft? Very hard choice between HE219A and Arado234B. But either of those is on the assumption that I could also afford to run/maintain it! But Dan’s put the pressure on to name one only – arrgghh … the Arado, no the Heinkel, no definitely the Arado (perhaps). Oh alright then, the Heinkel.

Probably go after a two seat Sea Fury myself. Pretty sure there are one or two left that haven’t been ‘Skyraiderised’ with R3350s 🙂
I’d like to see the whole world Skyraiderised, but then again I am biased! 😀 😀 😀
Seriously though, I prefer original kites too 🙂
My fav… sheesh… only ONE? Impossible… It must be a Skyraider… or an Me 262… or perhaps the Fw 190 V18/U1 (CF+OY, W.Nr. 0040) if you really want a specific serial! 😉
O and if it still has to exist today, I may just go for this little bugger! Gotto love it! 😎

Wellington, Whitley, Hampden, Stirling, Albermarle, Maryland, Baltimore, Manchester…………..

I’m with you Kev, but it won’t work so I would settle for a Spitfire Mk XII and a Mk 21.

2 seat Hunter, probably WV372 – lovely. 🙂
My dad would have the same. Hunter NF Mk.6 in 26 Sqn colours would be his choice, closely followed by a Mosquito Mk.2 like myself 🙂

If money was no object then i would have to have a De Havilland Mosquito Mk.2, FW190A or a Hawker Hurricane Mk.1.
All beautiful aircraft and not in the limelight as like the Spitfire or Mustang are.

Twin tail and a Pratt and Whitney R 450? The answer could only be the Broussard. Magnifique.LN-WNB “Yvette”. 😀

If I was to own it myself then I would like a Chipmunk for the simple reason I had my first taste of aviaton in one and they are simple to fly and operate.

The question, as it was originally framed, asked “warbird would I want to own, restore”
I fear the answer to this has to be a Spitfire IX, high back, full wings and rounded fin.
When you are a pilot who was brought up as I was on tales of the (then) recent BoB, and hear the original pilots talk in such glowing terms about the aircraft there can be no other answer.
If the question was rephrased as which aircraft would please the step-ladder brigade more, then that’s a different matter
Moggy.

A genuine 109 would be nice of course as would a Battle of Britain veteran Hurricane…….:rolleyes:Or…….
An original Fw190 or Bf110 would also be nice too or an original He111, Ju87 or Ju88 from the bomber stable.
But if I had just one choice it would be a MkII Lancaster with the Hercules radials just to see if it handled any different to the Merlin powered machines on just to hear what it sounded like.
Plus it would make a change from all the Spitfires/Mustangs that are saturating the warbird movement
Or how about a Gloster Gladiator or for an interessting challenge a Gloster E38/39?

None that I, or I believe, TFC can find. It was a rush job to meet a deadline and looked correct
