What's your favourite airshow moment? (So far!)

So people…what’s your favourite airshow moment? What sight or sound or display simply took your breath away?

For me…it was at the RAFA airshow at Shoreham in September 1998…the crowd expectantly awaiting the arrival of the Lancaster and her “little friends”…eyes searching the skies for the glimpses of those magnificent birds…eyes left…nothing…eyes right…nothing…then over the Sussex hills four tiny pricks of light…all eyes turned towards the lights…slowly…slowly…shadows behind the lights appear…the shadows grow closer and closer in the unmistakable forms of the Lancaster, the Spitfire and the Hurricane…it was as though time had slipped away and we were back in the dark days of the war…how so many people must have welcomed a sight like this during the war…the sight of an aircraft returning home to base safe and sound after performing her duty…oh what a magnificent sight…and a wonderful memorial to the men and women who lost their lives in the war…

I felt so proud that day…:)

By the way, apologies to everyone else that this hardcase-wannabe twit should spoil the tone of an otherwise good topic.

RE: What’s your favourite airshow moment?

LancMan,

My favourite moment, will be when you get in contact with me, about your comments re. Lance Corke Aero

If you are stuck for an e-mail address, feel free to use solotk@totalise.co.uk, and them maybe you can explain, your comment, that Lance deliberately misidentifies goods for sale.

I’m not going to let it drop, and you are not going to hide behind a forum, so, explain it to me. If you have a genuine grievance, it’s always better to sort it out with the organisation you have it with, or do you think you’re funny?

I suggest you get in contact, before a new thread starts….” Internet forums, if I post a potentially libellous remark, can I have action be taken against me?

RE: What’s your favourite airshow moment?

Not exactly nice, but memorable, was seeng those 2 Mig-29’s collide right in front of me at the IAT a few years back…

…seeing one of ‘558’s last displays, at Wroughton, with the ‘Farewell’ message in the bomb bay…

…seeing the Lancaster lose an engine mid-display and land rather hurriedly at St Athan in ’84…(It was pretending to be a Halifax at the time, of course!)

RE: What’s your favourite airshow moment?

Probably my favorite moment would be during the 1998 Tico Airshow in Titusville, FL. My dad and I were wandering around the airshow grounds, getting ready for the show to start and heard a low rumbling in the distance. A quick search of the skies saw what appeared to be a B-25 headed right towards us, fairly low.

As it got closer, I quickly realized that it was not a B-25, but was in fact Kermit’s B-26, fresh out of restoration. Kermit made a low pass directly over our heads, and then circled around, landed and taxied over to the flightline. I had never seen a B-26 before, and it was a most welcome surprise. My grandfather flew in JM-2s (Navy B-26), and it was nice to be able to match up some of the visual sites I saw that day with the stories he told.

Who can forget Stefan’s Bearcat displays! I concur! Saw him at Mildenhall….wow!

My all time favourite was 1999 12 spits opening the flying legends, always had some over my head and a tear in my eye! Words cannot describe the emotion of jubilation, pride, euphoria etc,

RE: Favourite airshow moment? (So far!)

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 16-01-02 AT 06:09 PM (GMT)]RIAT Lynx pair? Missed due to being inside a KC-10, but I did hear one of the aircrew with his videocamera point out the open door saying something along the lines of “he’s gonna pull the ******* rotors off!” and “it’s not meant to do that”

As far as airshows,
My first Bruntingthorpe trip,
Waddo ’00 (as I got out the car we were buzzed by 2 Tornado F.3s doing a fast pass, also my first major airshow)
Valley ’01 (appauling weather but the Reds were fantasic, I swear the solos swapped paint on those opposition passes!)
RIAT ’01 ( My first stealth, my first airshows with cadets among other things)
Nottingham open day (Posing before a lesson by the AvGas tank!!)

Roll on next season!!

RE: Favourite airshow moment? (So far!)

OOOOH too many to mention.
Most of mine are generic rather than specific events, but here’s a few:-

The (albeit lose) formation of Sally B,Pink Lady and PA474 at Wroughton some years back.
The first time a Bear arrived at Fairford.
The first time i saw Concorde out of Fairford -1967(not airshow i admit)
The first time a B2 arrived (flyby) at Mildenhall.
The first time i saw the Blenheim post restoration flight.
Sea Vixen Foxy lady’s first airshow appearance at Duxford last year.

Anytime XH5588(or any other Vulcan for that matter)lets the brakes go, rolls and rotates.
Ditto Lightning.
A number of Merlins in the air and NO PA.
NO PA !
Anytime i arrive at Old Warden.
When my name came over the PA at Old Warden as the winner of the Magister flight last year.
Anytime i arrive at Duxford.
Fridays at Faiford in RIAT park and View.
When the sun comes out.
ETC, ETC,ETC,ETC,
Phil.

RE: Favourite airshow moment? (So far!)

RAAF’s 70th anniversary back in 1990, seeing the RNZAF A-4K’s in formation (four ship) with the middle two joined via a buddy refuelling pod. Not to mention that this is where I got to fly the Spitfire Mk Vb :7

When push comes to shove, don’t stand near a cliff

RE: Favourite airshow moment? (So far!)

Well, how on earth do you single out even a few? Anyway, here goes with my offerings;

The 22 Hunter loop at Farnborough in 1958
The incredible daisey-cutting routines by Belgian Air Force F-84Fs at a couple of Wethersfield Armed Forces Days in the early 1960s
The P-51 tail-chase at the first couple of Flying Legends before it all got toned down a bit
Every time I saw a Lightning perform the staggering gut-wrenching rotation and vertical climb right after take-off
The Lynx duo at RIAT last year – ignored by many because it was “just helicopters” but it stopped me in my tracks and I think they should have received an award for it

RE: Favourite airshow moment? (So far!)

Got to be Flt.Lt.Pete Chapman’s jaw dropping Lightning solo at Biggin Hill B of B show, Sept 1974.
Then again…….any of Flt.Lt.Paul Millican’s display’s in Vulcan XH558.
or
Stefan Kwrowoski (spelling?) displaying TFC’s Bearcat at a damp drizzly Great Warbirds at West Malling, sometime in the early eighties. (83/84 possibly)
or
Any display by Ray Hanna and the late great Mark Hanna in anything with wings…..
or
I have to say as well that, emotionally, one display that sticks in the mind is the 2 x P51 display at the USAF Golden Airshow at Nellis in 1997. The aircraft were in the markings of wartime squadron pals Chuck Yeager’s ‘Glamourous Glen’ and Bud Anderson’s ‘Old Crow’, but on this day these 2 x P51’s were being flown by Chuck Yeager and Bud Anderson, amazing to see these veterans flying ‘their’ aircraft over 50 years after the wars end.

Hunter 50th at Kemble is the main airshow that springs to mind, best display goes to the late, great Mark Hanna in the Hunter at the 1996 Classic Jets show at Duxford.

RE: airshow moment? (So far!)

A few routines spring to my mind. The greatest one I think has to be Ray Hanna’s display at Biggin Hill in 1997 in the USAAF-marked PR.XI PL965.I’ve never seen such a beautiful aeroplane demonstrated so brilliantly. He managed to maintain alot of speed throughout the routine, pulling out of loops at no more than a few feet to regain the energy lost in the upward part of the manouvre.Breathtaking stuff.
I’d also rate Lee Proudfoot’s Lysander displays pretty highly. It was quite eye opening to see a Lizzie being barrel-rolled and wing-overed without any apparent difficulty.
If I’m allowed to mention a third display, then I think it would be Stephen Grey’s routine in TFC’s Spit Mk.V at Shepway seafront in 1996.
The novel viewing position of this clifftop venue made the disply look even more awesome.
I could go on to include TFC’s P38 displays,or the TFC Mk.XIV Spit tailchases or…

RE: airshow moment? (So far!)

My favourite airshow moments as a child was seeing the vulcan at RAF cosford each year, but my favourite moment ever,as a spitfire and hurricane fanatic has to be the flypast from behind the crowd at the duxford battle of britain show sept 2000. A truly stiring sight and sound. Also Lee Proudfoot and Ed Shipley’s display in two P.51d’s at the same show.:D

TFC’s Spitfire MKXIV at the flying legends in 2000! I believe it was a Paul Bonhamme flying in the spitfire tail chases and then displaying on its own to the crowds low passes high turns fast flybys.
“Remember”I also recall seeing Paul in the P47 coming down the hill towards the crowd then performing a fast flyby at full pelt with the tail swaying in the wash from its own propeller! anybody remember!

RE: West Malling

I’ll never forget my first Mildenhall trip, plus the display a few years back with a pair of Mustangs and a pair of F15s. apparantly the closest formation of these types ever.
