On Saturday afternoon I was up at East Midlands Airport, and watched a Gemini Air Cargo DC-10-30F take off, impressive to say the least, the DC-10/MD-11 series have long been my favourite civil aircraft in general, but whats your favourite Tri-jet?
Cheers, Dazza.

RE: What’s your favourite Tri-jet?
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 29-03-02 AT 07:22Â PM (GMT)]I have a soft spot for the Dc-10. first time I flew on one was LGW-JFK with Laker. Was never as keen on the Tristar. Also liked the 727 because very few UK airlines have ever had them Dan-air 727-100 and 200s. I think Sabre Airways bought some of these after Dan-air. Only flew on the type twice. Split to LHR with JAT and Miami to Kingston with Eastern. Strange really because there was so many. I still see them at Liverpool opperating cargo for TNT or DHL. Best DC-10 logos CP air and UTA. Also DAS cargo of Uganda looks good

Mines would have to be the MD11 just for sheer looks as I have never flown on one. I have flown on the Sabena DC10 but not the MD11. So before long I want to fly on one.

Memories , memories ….
An other topic is about gone airlines.
Here is one : UTA .
This one has been acquired by AF early 90’s.
I flew with them to SFO a couple of times and they were absolutely great.
Look at this great DC10-30 . He is now used by AOM – AirLib

RE: What’s your favourite Tri-jet?
That is hard though I could find out about how many of the aircraft were built:
DC-10/MD11=386 civil aircraft built with over 339 in service in 1999.
L-1011=250 built for civil flights and 156 still in service in 1999.
L10-11/500=50 built for civilian service with 34 in service in 1998.

RE: What’s your favourite Tri-jet?
Does anyone have any idea how many aircraft each of the DC10/MD11 series and Tristar were built? It would also be interesting to know how many of each are still in service. If anyone has just too much time on their hands, perhaps they could come up with a formula comparing performance and factors like numbers built, how many are still in use, number of take off and landing cycles, miles flown, safety record etc. Difficult, I know, but it would give an idea which aircraft was more successful in whatever category.

RE: What’s your favourite Tri-jet?
The MD-11/DC-10 is a better aircraft than the L-1011 because of several reasons. The DC-10-30 has a longer range, and a larger capacity for cargo. It is also more powerful. The L-1011 can carry slightly more passengers, but only about by 20 (DC-10 max is 380 while L-1011 max is 400). MD-11 is completely superior to L-1011. It has a much greater range (greater than DC-10 which is already much larger than L-1011), much more power, larger passenger capacity at 410 maximum, and a much greater cargo capacity. I for one think the MD-11 looks much better than the L-1011. The winglets do a lot for its appearance compared to the basic DC-10. I’m not downing the L-1011, which is a great aircraft, I just think the McDonnell Douglas (now Boeing) product is better. I think the engine buried in the tail looks better on smaller jets like the 727, Tu-154, and Yak-42

It’s aesthetically much more pleasing than the MD-11/DC-10,
It’s powered by those fantastic RB211’s
It’s cabin layout is better (2-4-3)

RE: What’s your favourite Tri-jet?
I rate the Tristar as the ultimate 3-holer.
Especially the colourful machines used by AirLanka and Gulfair and of course Delta.
It was a great machine, especially on night fligthts, it allowed you a reasonable sleep.
The Tristar was not very prone of turbulence and cabin is wide and silent.

RE: What’s your favourite Tri-jet?
My favourite Tri-jet is definately the TriStar. When I am at Gatwick in the summer I love watching the Air Transat and ATA TriStars taking off.Pity so many airlines are retiring them ATA and Delta come to mind although it has had a good life, first commercial flight was in 1972 with Eastern after many problems with the engines due to Rolls-Royces bankruptcy in 1970 after higher than estimated costs with the L-1011’s chosen engines the RB211.

RE: What’s your favourite Tri-jet?
Tristar, no argument. 727 was too noisy and often tatty in my experience, Trident was a commercial flop, DC-10 was ubiquitous and initially had a suspect safety record although I would have no concerns about flying on one now. The MD-11 was a waste of McD’s money and time to develop.
