When can we have them ?

Slightly off theme, but I couldn’t resist…………………………….

These are the latest sea trials of the F-35B on the USS Wasp. They were very successful, with 74 VL’s and STO’s in a three week period. The media and the program critics had predicted that we would burn holes in the deck and wash sailors overboard. Neither of which happened. You will notice a sailor standing on the bow of the ship as the jet rotates. That was an intentional part of the sea trials.

The USS Wasp is an amphibious assault ship designed to embark a Marine Expeditionary Unit. It is capable of simultaneously supporting rotary and fixed wing STOVL aircraft and amphibious landing craft operations. For this test deployment the USS Wasp was outfitted with special instrumentation to support and measure the unique operating environment as the F-35B conducted short takeoffs and vertical landings.
No catapult…… No hook ………….
The shape and scope of warfare – worldwide – just changed.

Too Many Jesus Bolts.

There is a fundamental issue with this a/c. It’s overly complicated and if it gets one small bit of shrapnel in there, and can’t translate – where will it land..? Not on our new carriers, if they have no arrester gear. Not on another carrier if the a/c have no hooks. I think that the carriers should have arrester gear anyway. Belts and braces etc. They won’t of course, so, when they go wrong, which they will, millions of Pounds of taxpayers cash will end up in the oggin.

I’m wondering if xtangomike is angling for the historic perspective of the irony that Britain came up with the modern steam catapult and arrester sytems (along with angled deck and mirror landing sight) back in the early 1950s, yet we seem to be absolutely stubborn in not wanting to introduce carriers/aircraft with these systems that still works so well for the US Navy.
The VTOL variant looks the most complicated, expensive, and least capable range/combat lift variant that we could go for.

Not truly Historic material but never mind, they will be given time.

Isn’t there one in Lincolnshire now with the RAF?

Moggy

The RAF’s first one has flown, but it’s still in the States.

Agreed, nice vid but it should be in modern military. I’d rather we just went for the c with cats and traps, the b just looks like a combination of huge amounts of maintenance and a lot to go wrong.

When can we have them?…. when they are old enough to be placed firmly within the remit of this forum…. I can’t get excited over the F-35. Its a Yak 38 with boy-racer spoilers! The yanks seem to think that they’ve invented something new, and that it will change the face of modern warfare but what they’ve actually done is re-invented the wheel. All Harrier users and Yak 38 users have been doing this kind of exercise since the 60’s….. Bored. Move along.
