In this day and age of smart bombs, long /medium range radar guided air – air missiles and stealth technology i was wondering if dogfights are a thing of the past [hopefully ,for all warfare] and if so when was it considered the last air – air combat took place.
Was there any during the last Iraq wars or was the Falklands the last.

Also Etriean Mig-29 downed a MiG-21 with cannon fire in 2000
An identical thread topic to this was posted on PPrune a while ago, and the concencus there agreed that the Eritrean-Ethiopean Mig vs. Mig encounters in 2000 was the last time.

Yep it would appear they are a thing of the past, as for the last dogfight i would have imagined it would be the Falklands, unless someone knows otherwise
Definitely not the Falklands, SAAF was having dogfights in 1987/88 and others even later. (As already sated.)

Dogfighting is close up with cannon. The Belgians practice it in F16’s, and i’m sure others do too. I have no idea when the last one was, but if it wasn’t cloe in twisty-turny it wasn’t a dogfight.
Dogfighting is indeed being close in, not necessarily just ‘guns’. Air combat manoeuvring covers Sidewinder type fights and line of sight engagements. Use of BVR (beyond visual range) weapons is not dog fighting or ACM…..a BVR could technically be launched from any platform (even a Cessna!!). BVR weapons and rules of engagement are interesting subjects in themselves and mistakes (huge cough) can happen

Dogfighting would probably be seen as too risky to use multi million (probably nearer billion by now) aircraft and the highly trained aircrew – even though it’s what they’re designed to do.

Could a dogfight not still occur?
Or do our air forces now blow up all “enemy” air power on the ground with missiles before this is allowed to happen?
There is footage from the falklands which shows “dogfighting”-no question. Were the MiGs shot down over serbia shot down with long/medium range AAMs?

Dogfighting, to me, counts as twisty – turny, trying to get on each others tail etc, so using missiles would count to me as dogfighting, long range missiles wouldn’t count though.

Would you consider using missiles [air to air] as dogfighting? or is using them nullifying a skill of pilot v pilot.

The South African boys were dogfighting Mig 21’s and 23’s around the 80’s and later in their Mirage F-1’s . . . 😀

When was the last Gun Vs Gun Dogfight that happened. ( Bekaa Valley? Iran/Iraq?)

Didn’t the US F-14s down a couple of MiG23’s off Tobruk in 1989?

I think I am right in saying that an F15 shot down 2 Mig 29s over Serbia. Can’t remember if that was the the first war or the Kosovo conflict. Didn’t hear of any engagements in the recent Iraq invasion but there were several in the first Gulf war involving US aircraft and maybe the second as well.
