Hi Folks,
As the question says, when was the last time a Mustang was flown in military ownership and operation?
The answer might not be expected, and yes, me asking is a clue. It’s not a quiz, as I don’t know the answer! 😀
All answers and thoughts appreciated.
Cheers

i may stand corrected but didn’t the us army still have a mustang on their book’s until the early to mid 90’s. it was used as chase plane on tests of the apache and also tested recoiless cannons.

I know they used one as chase for the Cheyenne helicopter program but that certainly didn’t last into the ’90s. Maybe the early ’80s, though maybe not even that long. This Mustang is preserved somewhere, Fort Rucker maybe?

And there’s the SAAF operated Mustang damaged in a wheels up landing back in 2001. Wasn’t this undergoing a repair back to flight status, any news on current status..?
Good point. Well, it isn’t flying AFAIK. So they could take the title, but they’d have to fly it! Anyone got info on the SAAF machine’s status?

However I’ll aim to be at the final Military Mustang landing at RAAF Point Cook, Monday 15th August 2005, as I reckon that’s a little bit of history.
What about the SAAF one though….

I didn’t say front line, which I guess would be the Dominican Air Force.
What about the about to be grounded A68-170…?
Is that not operated by the RAAF in the same way as the BBMF operate..?
Yes, ‘A68-750’ in reality A68-170, is currently an RAAF Aircraft, operated by an RAAF Unit, flown by an RAAF (Reserve) pilot. It is civil registered though, as VH-SVU. Like any of these ‘records’ you can adjust your criteria to fit your preference; it’s not ‘frontline’, not NA built, etc. However I’ll aim to be at the final Military Mustang landing at RAAF Point Cook, Monday 15th August 2005, as I reckon that’s a little bit of history.

If my information is correct, the Dominican Air Force last Mustang sortie was on May 19th, 1984.

1984 should be the year

My thoughts would be Dominican Republic, early 1980s.

Technically military flown and operated, or do you mean front line service operation..?

Didn’t the Dominican Republic use them along the border with Haiti into the early 70’s, which is why quite a few more survived.
What about the Cavalier, didn’t the US military test some of these out in the 70’s.
During the Indonesia Crisis in 1965 didn’t the Indonesian airforce use P-51s which lead to the RAF practising interception flights between a Lightning and a spitfire in order to adopt the best tactics for attack, I gather it was decided to get underneath, go vertical and give a passing spray of cannon fire on the way up, more in hope than judgement.

I have a strange feeling that the PRC had a few from somewhere… perhaps they had the last flight?
