12 years later after the last message on this board, but better late than never as they say!

It looks like Spitfire TB382 “The last Spitfire to be broken up” has a positive future of being saved itself. Flypast Magazine “January 2018” spoke to Darren Harbar from Airframe Assemblies on the Isle of Wight and they said that when time allows, they will restore what’s left of the airframe (it is missing its tail, control surfaces, engine bearers and the engine).

Around the time of Bader’s death a figure appeared at the top of his portrait. I’m no expert on oil paintings nor did I know what Bader’s wife looked like at that time but it certainly didn’t look like anything had been added or removed. There is now what could be interpreted as the head and shoulders of a woman. Experts were given the opportunity to check the painting and concluded it had not been tampered with.

Intresting & spooky also!!!!, Thanks for that merlin 70. What about the name Sylvia M on the skin, Does anyone at the BBMF know if its still there under the paint.

Does anybody know if the words were still under the paint that has been applied over the years?
Can you enlighten me on the subject of Bader painting .

Immediately next to the fuselage were the wings, beyond that Hurricane LF’. Despite the hangar having the whole of the BBMF fleet in it at the time, there was nothing near by that would have provided that image.

May be it has qualities similar to the Bader painting in RAFC College Hall.

On a Hunter DVD which I can’t find at the moment there is some footage of Air-to-ground firing in a T7 (poss 145 Sqn) – the target seems to be a late mark low-back Spitfire – and as the footage is in colour it can’t be much earlier than the early 1960s

Strange that you mention that – I also recall a piece of (colour?) footage from a Spitfire documentary showing one being blown up on a range. Something tells me it was the Channel 4 “Equinox” special from waaaay back.

Fascinating and close to the heart.

I think you have identified firing on the Larkhill Ranges on Spitfires PK518 and PK519.

The father of one of my friends, who was an engine mechanic in RNoAF quite a bit ago told me that he had been witnessing a line of Spits parked outside being drained of all liquids, stripped of some parts, then a truck came with a few guys with blowtorches and they just cut the engine carriers right off,so the Merlins just plunged into the tarmac… The image in my mind thinking of it is horrifying! 😮

Best to just put this one to the back of your mind for the time being, until after TE311 is up and away. 🙂

Mark

So does that mean the BBMF will have six spitfire’s flying ?

If so,he’s not the only one. There’s a reflection there with a fleeting image vaguely resembling a Spit… 🙂

When I was a lad at Lyneham in the early fifties there were many aircraft coccooned including at least a dozen Spitfires, that was about 1953-55, I also have a pic of a Spit which my mate worked on at Leuchars in the sixties, some of the groundcrew are sitting on the wings photo courtesy of Jim Duncan
