Where and What?

I`m sure some one will be able to say where it is and what the aircraft is.

No, it’s likely to be 1944 after Rootes had finished building Beaufighters at Blythe Bridge. This info is from Phil Butler, the Lend Lease specialist.

Thanks, that makes sense.

Wonder if the Mustangs are getting Malcolm hoods fitted?

Yeah you are probably right. Looking at the profile here it seems to fit the photo.

I was convinced I could make out a thicker top part of the wing that was partly masking the horizontal surfaces of the tailplane which made me think it was a Master III.

Looks like a Miles Master III to me.

No its definately a Harvard, the Master had a centre section with a distinct amount of dihedral, as well as being very thick compared to the Harvards thinner/flatter centre section.

Is the 1942 date correct? The Mustangs seem to have merlins.

Rootes Securities at Blythe Bridge on the perimeter of Meir used to assemble Harvards crated in. They also modified Mustangs flown in after assembly elsewhere, Speke for example.

Cant see any Squadron codes on the Mustangs, were they were removed by the censor? If not would it indicate an OTU?

As the image is titled “Meir 1942.jpg” I assume it’s Meir (Stoke-on-Trent) as it was in 1942.

History of Meir as reported in the local paper:

Why wasn’t Meir airfield developed after the Second World War to provide Stoke-on-Trent with a commercial airport? It’s a question which still crops up, even though the last plane took off from the airfield in 1973 and the site off the A50 has long been covered with industry and housing. However, Meir was doomed from the start by its location close to a thickly-populated area, the sloping ground and an industrial haze which created problems of visibility. The airfield was opened by the city council in 1934 as Staffordshire’s first municipal airport and initially called the City Aerodrome. From 1939 it became a wartime RAF station where novice pilots were trained. Bombers assembled at the nearby Rootes factory at Blythe Bridge were also flown from Meir. After the war, activities were largely confined to glider training for ATC cadets, although Staffordshire Potteries flew aircraft in the 1950s and the Staffs Light Plane Group continued until the 1970s.

Have not seen this photo. before yesterday! I know where and what do you?

It’s such a small picture.
Looks like a Harvard buzzing a Spitfire?
Would guess at Gary Neuman at Weald or Biggin?
Then again it’s probably a lot older, ww2 etc.

I agree- rounded wingtips and photo taken about 300ft off the deck when parked- it could only be a Stirling!

I couldn’t guess a location but judging by the shadows – wing shape and exhaust appearing to be on the upper outboard portion of the cowling, I’d say she’s a Stirling.
