Where did Goering view the white cliffs from?

Can anyone help me out please?

I am off to Calais next week and want to go to the spot where Goering looked at the white cliffs of Dover as the Luftwaffe flew over his head. Does anyone know where the spot was or can recommend a good spot to see England from France?

Cheers

Heh. Nope. Latham was French – born in France to French parents, though his paternal grandfather was English.

Aha! All becomes clear… Stupid boy!

The memorial is a statue of early aviator and competitor with Bleriot for the first channel crossing, Hubert Latham, near Sangatte.

So let me get this right…

The English commemorated a Frenchman in England for getting there. The French commemorated an Englishman in France for not getting there?…

Rum folk, these French and English…

Thanks for the information. I had a quick check on the Battle of Britain film (the Robert Shaw, Michael Caine etc version) and in the shot of Goering watching the Luftwaffe there is a tall thin memorial of some sort behind him. Possibly this is the one mentioned in the reply earlier. Best way to find out is to have a drive to it now I at least have a starting point.

Thanks all

IIRC, there is some debate about whether Goering was at Cap Gris Nez, Cap Blanc Nez, or both which is possible as they are not far apart.

I think Charley’s right – Cap Gris Nez is in my memory banks.

Although it is possible that had something to do with the Scharnhorst/Gneisnau channel dash – is there another image of German officers watching the air cover or am I muddling things?

IIRC Cap de Gris Nez is the nearest point. It’s still festooned with bunkers and there are other interesting memorials such as to the Dover Patrol plus a statue of Napoleon.

Wissant I believe offers a view of the white cliffs, the old airfield and a Canadian Cemetery all from the motorway services. That’s where I saw them from last April. 10 or 15 mins from Eurotunnel.
