Hi all,
now i know acquiring an aircraft or cockpit is hard enough, but now it seems impossible.Has everything dried up?Have the Chinese bought them all and melted them down, or is it just beaurocrats? I never realized the 2 sea hawk hulks at Yeovilton were scrapped a year ago, although i believe the cockpits were saved?
It seems that aircraft that are left derelict seem to be given No 1 position
either in Paintball parks or as diving rigs and being submerged when they come up for disposal. Why is it so hard to even get a acknowledgment from these people?
I phoned about the Hunter hulk that was at Predanick the GA.11(my favorite) at the Paintball park only down the road now from me and enquired about it. They said oh yeah that old thing,we just got it and are going to paint it green and have Paintball fights around it and NO its not for sale! How do these people get to hear about these things before anybody else when there is so many of us who would really appreciate something like that and give it some love and restore it! It bloody infuriates me as far as these people are concerned, its just another old scrap plane to shoot Paintballs at Am i alone in this,is it JUST me or do others feel the same way I do? I’ve been looking for a project for years and never seem to get the chance!I bet your bottom dollar the Canberras ,Wessex, Blah, Blah, Blah, will end in Paintball parks, diving rigs or even worse scrapped! Bloody red tape, ho needs it . 🙁 😮
There I’ve had my moan, Please feel free to moan with me

i guess tony you were loking for that ilusive Hurricane that was there, shame old peter Arnold, Bought near enough everything, well anthing ww2 apart from that Prop boss from a hurri , i was in there searching for stuff for the canadian halifax, I even got quite a few visits from Karl Kjasgaard, hunting with me for bits, I took him to a multitude of places, looking for halibag bits,
I wish i had bought one of those canopys though, there was a pile of tidy ones, problem was i had to wait for the phone at home to get the Order from the canadian lot to bid on certain parts, and sadly they left it too late, by the time they phoned me, (no mobile back then),I got there in a rush and just missed it, I remember p,arnold grinning ear to ear as he had the “Worlds”
collection of spitfire undercarraige legs, Kygass primers, turret rings all sorts of goodies, Shame they scrapped the wings etc of WV838, Roy could do with tha stuff now,
is there Any Scrappies left, does hanningfords still get stuff?
or what about some of the museums ,gotta be honest some aircraft are in a right state, now i am not having a go, i know its hard and expensive to
try and look after a gaggle of aircraft at a museum , when they are outside for 20 + years, but some of the repairs, I saw a meteor once having patches of Sheet fibreglass plastered all over it, and it looked a right bodge job,
i remember thinking “ouch” what happens when a museum aircraft becomes
a dangerous liability , (IE its falling apart) I am sure there is a few aircraft like this in the country, I remember when the welsh museum closed, I really wanted the Mystere, that was abandoned there, but they were something to do with the USAF, and they were witnessed by them being scrapped,
🙁

Nice aircraft, cockpit very poor, the Scrappies thought they would get a mint for it at the auction…unsold….a few years before, I found the stick/yoke off it in the yard…

i got the top of the smased ejector seat with the “danger” plate, and couple of other bits a pieces, but i was allways told she had something to do with the lodon-christchuch new zealand run,

That depends on who you know, not what you know, a close friend of mine was gifted a Hunter nose in the last year, all he had to do was move it. If memory serves me right, it cost a total of £50.00 cash, a packet of Rothmans Royals and two pints of German Pilsner!!
Yeh, but i take Mr Webb’s acquistion to be an exception rather than the rule
Did you see one of the Air Race Canberras there? Just the cockpit smashed to bits. I forget her number off hand but I was told she was something to do with the record breakers in the day…..
I still have the the build plate from WD965. Was that the one ? The rest was barely recogniseable as a Canberra. UK Serials
has this to say….
WD965 Canberra B2 d/d 04/02/1952, sold as scrap 07/09/1970 at No.15 MU Wroughton, to G H Flower & Son

when i was alot younger, i used to climb all over WV838, I was allways in that scrap yard, i had the stick from wv838, (which i gave Roy when i found out he was restoring her)
she was in 5 parts, Tail, middle ,cockpit near the fence, and wings
all the undercarraige in as well, it was just the cockpit that was gutted,
those were the days 🙂
Flowers at Chippenham, I remember seeing that poor old bird there, Roy has done a sterling job on her.

Both alive and well!
XE339 was split between two owners – one person wanted the cockpit and Roy wanted the rest for WV838, whilst WV903 is in storage with unsuprisingly forum member WV903!
The only bits that were lost were the wings which were scrapped by the Royal Navy prior to them being sold.

I gotta say Bucc,he is one lucky b******, It’s also how you look at it. My mate who restores planes to fly, thinks its a bit of fun, BUT SPEND HUNDREDS OF POUNDS EVEN THOUSANDS ON A PIECE OF SCRAP that will never fly. He just can’t get over that. He can’t understand those who love aircraft, don’t necessarily want to fly in them. It’s horses for courses, one mans poo, is another mans gold so to speak

Yep just like Tim Hake all those years ago, got that Canberra from the Castle cary ATC for £50. The C/O thought it was a health hazard and dangerous, so he bit Tim’s hand off. And then there’s the recently scrapped cockpit of a Canberra in Kilmarnock by
the ATC.

OK,I didn’t know Roy Coates was telling me when he bought his Seahawk
it cost him around £300 and he was spitting chickens at that price. And I know it was 3 years ago, but i was offered a single seat Venom, pod, with canopy and some bits a pieces in it for £600 but i had just lost my job(redundunt) so I couldn’t have it.A the same time, I was offered a complete Mig21 cockpit from Poland for £1000, but I had to collect it in person (in Poland) and yet as I say, I had just been made redundant. I had been looking for months and as the calls came in, I go and loose my job, just bad luck i suppose. I would kill for that chance again! I tell you,the Mig had ALL of its clock in it and had just been cut, £1000.I hate to think what that is worth now, that’s inflation for you eh, Haha.

Wasn’t Stavertons Canberra cockpit up for grabs lately?
Staverton is the current home of a dismantled but complete TT.18, it was sold fairly recently to a Dutch owner as a complete aircraft.
It is due to move from Stav in the near future.

Hmm, I suspect Everett will want more that a £1000! I have heard that £1500 could possibly secure a Jag cockpit though.

Blow me, I thought that site had ceased operating, not a bad price for a Canberra.
Also Merkle, be under no illusion, moving (possible crane and transportation hire) costs, storage costs and restoration costs can be expensive. When it comes to storage even a small project can suddenly become relatively large.
If transport/crane is required we have now settled on John Robsons Ltd who specialises in aircraft/component moves and is very competitively priced.
We usually use “Lucifer” which is a 560hp Volvo STGO-3 26 ton tractor unit mounted with a 55 ton capacity, 50 foot reach hiab and flat bed trailer, this rig removes the need for a crane in most cases and thus works out a much cheaper method, other trailers/trucks are available to suit the application.
If anyone has a need to use them please contact us for their details.

Who’s Stavertons Cockpit? (Staverton in Glos) or Mr Staverton?
I didn’t realise there was one.Whats the gen on it?Do you know any more ??
Although I suppose I should hold my horses for a smaller type, as if I can get it in my mums double garage, then I have my compressor all the air tools, sand blaster and tools galore and I can pop in and out as I please. An hour every night after work etc.Just ease of work that’s all and its dry and NO I don’t live at mum’s but close by and it would get me away from the trouble and strife for a few hours 😀
