i wonder if enyone can help me with this…
a few years ago [more like 15] my brother and i went to RAF credenhill air day [its now the home of the SAS], after the air display we decided to have a stroll around. we noticed a hanger locked up, but there was just enough of a gap to peer through. and there she was parked in the hanger [wings folded] a sea vixen. she looked in exellent condition.
i dont know why she was there or how she got there….do enyone know who she was and where is she now, and why was she locked away in a hanger at RAF credenhill ?????.

I’m afraid they were all scrapped together in 1992 🙁

There was actually 3 Sea Vixens there at that time XJ608 / XN699 and XP921 so that probably adds a little to the confusion. I expect the one you saw with 921 would have been XN699 as XJ608 was used for battle damage repair training in a different part of the airfield I believe.
DGH,
You’re quite correct, there were three, my memory is in decline! I was really eager to have a look but I also wanted my time there to be minimal, so the job in hand won!!!!
Any idea what happened to the others?

Indeed there is, FGA9 XG194
As far as I’m aware it’s still there. Picture at the link below.

The Sea Vixen in question was XP921 which came from Halton and then went to North Luffenham before being scrapped in 1992.
Thanks for ending a 14 year mystery for me! I did my MFT (Military Field Training) at NL, and remember being told to “get away from those heaps”. There were 2 Sea Vixens at NL in 1991 (Sept) and both were very sun bleached and featured notices saying “U/C unsafe, explosive charges” on the fuz sides.
So one was XP921, what was the other one? Overflew NL yesterday in something big and black, and the only aircraft there now is a Phantom.

Unfortunately I have no idea why she was there but as she came from Halton I suspect she would have indeed been in good condition. I would not be surprised if at least some of her systems were operational. Once she moved to North Luffenham she was used for weapons disposal training. Unfortunately the condition of an airframe counts for very little when its surplus to requirements.

yes it was 1987…i was quite young then. i can remember a F-16 [from holland i think] doing a very noisey display. i am pretty sure XH558 displayed too..
i have got to ask the question..why was the sea vixen scrapped!!!!. from what i can remember she looked in good nick…what a waste 🙁 ..eny one know why she was in hereford..

Scimatar,
Can’t help with the querie on the Sea Vixen, but maybe can on the date. I’m also originally from Hereford, and the only display I can remember at Credenhill was (by my reckoning) in 1987. Only acts I can remember were the Reds, a Sea King rescue, and the much missed Dutch Grasshoppers. Lovely weather, though!
