Where To Go In Houston ??

Will be in Houston for the next couple of weeks.

Busy during the working week, but weekends will be my own.

Already planning a trip down to the “Lone Star Flight Museum” but can anyone recommend anything else of interest (aviation wise) within say a 2-3 hr drive ?

Thanks in advance,

On a small side note about the Texas and her location. 1.) She was pounding the gun emplacements on the beaches at Normandy on the 6th. 2.) The place where she is birthed is called the San Jacinto Battleground. This is the very piece of land where the Texas Army defeated the Mexican Army for her independence in 1836. There is a giant monument there, called the San Jacinto Monument of course, which you can tour and go to the top of, as well as tour the entire battleground. The area around Houston and in neighboring Brazoria County, are the places where Texas was originally settled and began. Checking out the local tourism sites or the Texas Parks & Wildlife site might give you a better idea of the things you can visit and experience if you are into that sort of history.

If you’d like to check out the Collings Foundation A-4 and F-4 give me a PM.

Oh, I almost forgot. After you tour the Texas, head just up the road to a place called Monument Inn. EXCELLENT seafood!!

Not directly aviation-related, but you need to visit USS Texas… the only preserved WW1-era dreadnaught in the world.

Not bad looking for a 94 year-old ship!

In all the time I lived in Texas, I never went to Houston so I’ haven’t driven this route, but it shouldn’t be too far
(keeping in mind “far” is a relative term in Texas).
🙂

You might try going up to Dallas/Ft.Worth to see the Cavanaugh Flight Museum.
Also, the American Airlines Museum is nearby (just south of the DFW airport) with a great restored early DC-3 and lots of memorbilia/exhibits.

Yeh, been there a good few times, last time january this year. LSFM is a must, also within the HOU area is the USS Texas, really worth a visit, NASA go see their vistors centre, and then look round Ellington field, you’ll catch NASA, ANG jets flying around, also you’ll see the vomit comet, Corpus Christi and the USS Lexington is good but about a 4 hour drive (I did it in under but got caught speeding, didn’t impress my wife…..:( )

Hope you have fun.
