Where was it filmed?

Hi all,

Just watched best of top gear and they were reviewing two cars at a pretty derelict airfield somewhere, don’t know where it was, any ideas?

The hangers seemed pretty knacked with some windows missing and some boarded up, although there was a large apron and a portion of the runway that they went on.

Any Ideas?

Cheers

Ollie

The sequence on Sunday was definitely shot at Watton.

The tower was a ww2 tower with the large glass new tower stuck on top of it like at RAF Church Fenton. The hangars were C type but couldn’t see if they were the full length bomber ones or the shorter fighter ones. The layout was the standard 3 in a loose semi circle.

Watton airfield has 4 C type hangars and i believe they are the full length ones. The airfield is still used for para dropping by the USAF special forces herks from Mildenhall.

I would like to stress that I did not see the actual programe but should have explained that Top Gear was to move locations to Enstone. When, thats another story.

It was on BBC World last night, the Top Gear episode where Jeremy drives a Porsche and a Merc around Eastmoor while snipers from some Irish unit try to shoot him. Is this the episode you refer to?

Many various areas around STANTA, including Watton aerodrome, were used as locations in Dad’s Army. They were always based in Thetford during location filming.

Yeah, isn’t far from east Wretham. Hehe, I was doing guard on that camp once with Cambridge University OTC when I went to check the phone hut and heard something behind the door. Was a rather buxom cadet on her knees in front of another cadet. Oh the winding up we did after that….. the following eyar I volunteered to go back. Ran the bar for two weeks and doubled my pay with tips and extra stuff we bought and sold.

Eastmore – really really tall buildings and a funny looking church, beige colour buildings, yeah?

Whilst Enstone is extremely handy for Mr Clarkson the architecture does not match…………….

The village was especially constructed to train the army in the art of urban warfare against the Warsaw pact armies it opened in 1990 just prior to the Berlin Wall being torn down.

There is a village like this at East Wretham in Norfolk which used to be an airfield, It forms part of the battle area and is not too far from Watton airfield.

Hang on, Eastmoor FIBUA village. I know it VERY well if it’s the one I’m thinking of. It’s in the middle of Stanford Training Area (STANTA), Thetford Forest. It’s not an airfield, it’s an artificially constructed village based on Northern European housing that is excellent fun to run around in with vast quantities of blank ammunition and practice grenades. I recall a large roadway with loads of parked hi performance cars (fairly new) parked up which were used as barricades etc – having been used in Northern Ireland undercover. I wish I’d seen it now, then I’d tell you if it was. Otherwise, Watton, (no village) or another airfield that had the old married quarters turned into the FIBUA training village – can’t for the life of me recall the name of the place though. I have Eastmoor on a map at my parents, but it won’t be on a civvy map.

I believe the new location for the Top Gear programe is Enstone Airfield, Oxfordshire.

Just up the road from the Renault F1 racing teams HQ.

Watton is in Norfolk, It is the “Village” location, Airfield shots are two seperate locations. Cunning eh. Now work out the airfields.., hangar types and layout will help.

There was an Eastmoor in Yorkshire close to where my mother lived during the War. It’s now a pig farm.
