I’d never heard this guy speak until playing my newly arrived Hurricane video today (£4.99 from Duke, bargin’!) Where’s that accent originate? Just when I thought I heard a bit of Dutch, it sounded a bit Finnish, Icelandic or South African, too!

A good post there mate!
I wouldn’t have asked such a daft question, but after seeing him on that tape, it just bugged me and bugged me!

Really do not care where Stephen is from but I suspect it is the UK.
What I do care about is the enormous pleasure his devotion to warbirds has given to us all. God knows at what cost over so many years but we all owe him a debt of sincere gratitude.
Apart from that he is a really nice bloke with a fantastic family behind him. As a company doctor, friends tell me, he is without equal.

Janie , no problems,i think i went off a bit hard as well so apologies from me as well 😀
As a matter of fact i am going to see the Shadows next year on their final farewell tour [till the money runs out] and i’ve seen Cliff [took Mum,my excuse].
It is the back tracks that annoy me,many a good video ruined by so i hope the people who make them will give uos options with the dvd’s.
Once again sorry:)

Why are you so aggresive,i was stating a fact,i would like to hear the sounds of the planes not what someone else interprets that i would like to hear music wise.
Yes i have owned a dvd player for a while now ,but i was asking if the new dvd ‘s being released were able to have option of the music and commentary removed as part of the options in the menu.
By the way theres nothing wrong with Eminem or some of Cliffs stuff in the right place and time.
I can only think of two occasions when the music has suited an aircraft film,1 the Battle of Britain ,actually most of it is excellent but the big air battle scene is superb and in one of the Vietnam movies with music from the Valkries and the helicopters.
Its not a lot to ask, an aircraft DVD is about aircraft, not psuedo rock muzak.
i’ LL give you an example,i own the story of black 6 the restoration project on video. You watch it and see actually how little you get to hear the beautiful D-Benz engine.
When the engine runs ,the commentator/narrator talks or they put music over it,i am lucky in living close to Duxford and so i managed to video quite a bit of her and she sounds lovely, but anyone that bought this video because they never saw her fly will not hear the engine vey well.
Oh well i’ll leave you to listen to Sir cliff as the Merlins belt out over the airfield 😀

Ahh. Hmm… OK…
Well, if you were to put it in the war movie, with a load of Heinkels and Me109s tearing ass across the Channel, it might work then!
In your FACE, Francis Ford Coppola! 😉

Daz
Valkyries might sound great, but seeing as it was one of Hitler’s favourite pieces, it could be considered a weeny tactless. Any one agree. I’m not too bothered though.
By: DazDaMan - 24th November 2003 at 18:08
Bugger the rock music – get some Ride of the Valkyries in there!
I always envisaged a war/flying movie with a load of classical music for the good bits. It’d rock! 😀

🙁 I don’t tend to buy aircraft videos anymore because they put on cr*p psuedo rock music,i hope with DVDs coming out they will give you an option to cut out the music, especially when the sound of the aircraft should be paramount.
By: Bluebird Mike - 22nd November 2003 at 10:33
LOL @ the last two posts!
Agreed the music is pretty naff, but I kinda expect that from your average aviation video! Still some great footage of the Hurri though, hence my reccomendation at it’s current price. 😉

Stephen’s accent is just ‘the Queen’s English’. It’s so rarely heard nowadays that it can sound a little strange or foreign!
😀

Well, I’m glad you’re clearer as regards to Stephen Grey’s accent and that you are enjoying your video!
I bought mine about three years ago or more and I must say I was quite dissapointed with it.
I had already got the Spitfire one and enjoyed it very much. However it seems that the original makers (Battlebase) must have gone bust or something as the Hurricane one was made by Duke themselves from the materiall shot by them.
I thought it was badly edited and lacked polish when compared to the Spitfire video. And I thought that the music they played during Steven Grey’s aerobatic sequence spoiled it somewhat. I think the sound of the Merlin would have been better!
Basically I think it could have been done better.
However I did enjoy Steven Grey’s talk about how he got the aircraft and his cockpit breifing.
Despite my comments, I’d say it’s still worth having in your collection especially with the new price tag of £4.99!
Cheers

Lancman,
Good question.
I believe he is English but from what I understand he spent a lot of time in Switzerland (I think he lived there for many years) and seems to have picked up that “hard to put your finger” on accent.
I also understand that he can speak several languages too.
In fact I recall that after his emergency landing in ML417 at the 1986 Middle Wallop airshow, he talked to my dad about it then was approached by a French guy and proceeded to tell him all about it in French!
Always seems to have a good sense of humour and a comes across as modest kind of bloke.
Not to bad a pilot either! 🙂
Cheers
Paul
