If you were to start an airline, covering upto 400 mile sectors with up to 40 passengers, what aircraft would be best, being pilot/passenger friendly. Economical with low passanger loads.
Also what aircraft would you choose for up to 60-70 passengers.

I’d open a classic airline with a couple of DC4’s.

YAY!! Fellow ATR fans!!!:p
Deffo ATR, Dash-8 Q400s tend to have nose gear malfunctions, SAS got rid of theirs over that!
So I think the ATR 72-600 (when available) would be perfect for your requirement. If strapped for cash an older 500 might do the trick

Why yes, I am the older brother at 72 and he’s the younger at 42.:p
p.s. thanks for the welcome all.
Hey, are you two brothers? :p
The Dash 8 is a possibility. It flies faster than the ATR, and so on longer legs can be more efficient even though the consiumption per hour is higher. The Q400 is a proven model for the larger pax number mentioned here, although I’m a little sceptical the Q200 or Q300 would be a better option in the smaller market.
I still say ATR.

I am biased also and think you can’t go wrong with ATR42 or 72, Dash 8 could be a possibility.

Sounds ideal for the ATR’s to me but then I am biased:)

Fly both with the ATR 42 and 72. Save on fleet commonality that way too. (pilots can fly both types, maintenance requires much the same parts and knowledge, etc.) The ATR is by far the most fuel efficient of the props.
Also depending on your budget, you can get older second hand models of the -200 variety, models only a few years old with the -500, or brand new with the -600 variation.
Its win/win right?

got to agree with that, but if your in the older 2nd hand market, an F50 might do

www.q400.com says you need 25 seats filled to breakeven.

Are you in competition? What sort of pax, business men or back packers? Any runway or othr operational restrictions at either end? Do you have suitable diversion fields?
