Don’t know if this would be better off in the Photographic forum, but here goes anyway:
I’ve got a new toy in the shape of proper film scanner picked up off eBay. A strip down for relubrication and mirror cleaning, and it’s as good as new.
To watch the Digital Ice de-dusting and the automatic colour restoration in action is an entertainment in itself. It’s been particularly effective on some ancient Ektachromes bequeathed to my by a family friend from the Farnborough show in the early 1960s. but the question is, which one?
I think it’s either 1962 or 64. Sample attached, and others include the HP115, Short SC1 and a Comet 4C in Middle Eastern Airlines livery. Can anyone identify which show for certain?
Some others attached for no reason other than nostalgia. the Sunderland is the first colour picture I ever took of an aeroplane (Pembroke Dock, August 1965), the Oxford is Staverton in April 1969, and the Potez is at Filton, 1970. Later that year it had an undercarriage collpase at Filton and a prop blade penetrated the fuselage, giving a Sud Aviation grand fromage the fright of his life.
A Google search suggests that F-BMCY ended up in the Shetlands. Can anyone elucidate?

William, I have searched the Internet for a Digital Ice scanner and come up with zilch. Could you give more information on it such as the make and/or a website please?
Bri
He may mean one like this: http://tinyurl.com/34ctla
I have been using a Nikon Coolscan V for several years and, while it takes a bit of getting used to and the task of post-processing needs some time too, the results are very good.

FARNBOROUGH AIR SHOW 1961

Those shots certainly brought back some great memories, William !!!
I was at the September 1961 SBAC Air Show at Farnborough myself and can definately confirm that both the Victor (XL164) and the Comet 4C (Registered as G-AROV – in full M.E.A. livery) were amongst the aircraft on display that year.
Just for interest’s sake – the Comet was first registered in August 1961 as ‘G-AROV’ and painted up in full M.E.A. colour scheme. It was never delivered to M.E.A. but sold as ‘LV-PTS’ in April 1962 to Aerolineas Argentinas, re-registered May 1962 as ‘LV-AIB’ (named “President Kennedy”) and sold subsequently to the UK operator ‘Dan Air’ on 20-10-1971 (re-registered again as ‘G-AROV’). The aircraft was withdrawn from use in 1977 (last flight 31-10-1977) and finally scrapped at Lasham in November 1978.
As for the Victor …………… This is ‘XL164’ (Converted to K.2 tanker by Hawker Siddeley in the 1970s) as she is now – at the Gatwick Aviation Museum

Here are some links to her “better days”!!!

Here’s a couple of my shots of these two aircraft from the 1961 SBAC Air Show

The Victor picture brings back memories. If it was taken on the Saturday then one of those heads behind the car behind the scouts must be mine!

As soon as I can crowbar oldest son from the main computer I’ll post a few more from the 60s and 70s. Meanwhile I’ll put a few thoughts about used scanners on the photgraphic section.
I’ve done a bit more Googling and F-BMCY is the same airframe that’s now doubling up as a garden shed somewhere near Sumburgh.
My first full-time job as at Filton and I remember seeing her in the hangar after the u/c collapse, and the slot in the fuselage where the detatched prop blade had penetrated the skin. Apparently the blade had transfixed a seat cushion while leaving the occupant of the seat physically unscathed, but no doubt a gibbering wreck. I’m not a nervous flyer, but I have avoided sitting in line with the propeller arc ever since seeing that Potez.
I’ve checked against the scramble.nl site and the Farnborough pix can only be the 61 show. Many thanks Mark 12 for pointing me towards it.

I don’t see anything wrong with it being posted here because of the historic aircraft content:) Very nice photo’s!
But could it not also be posted in the photographic section? 😉

I think Hunting Percival would have been be rather surprised to have been credited with the HP 115. 🙂

Nice photos William have enjoyed viewing them.
Am envious of your acquisition of a film scanner – I’ve been thinking about one for years to copy my large slide & negative collection.
Amongst my earliest photos I have a similar shot of Peter Thomas’s Sunderland that I snapped (I reckon earlier than 1965) at Pembroke Dock. It doesn’t have the queue of punters waiting to go inside but is black and white and not as good quality (via, I think, my Kodak 44a camera).
Interesting the connection with the Oxford as that was also Peter Thomas’s – or more correctly Skyfame Museum which he set up at Staverton after acquiring the Sunderland.
There is a Potez preserved in the Shetlands (not sure if same one) and was discussed on the forum:
http://forum.keypublishing.co.uk/showthread.php?t=60028&highlight=Potez+Shetlands
Would love to see more of the results of you labours sweating over a hot scanner !!

I have shots of a similar Victor, no underwing markings, the SC1 and the HP115 and they were confirmed yesterday on Planetalk as September 1961. That does not mean the same aircraft did not appear in following years.
