Cat among the Pigeons time…
Which magazine Flypast or Aeroplane Monthly do you think has done more to promote this country’s aviation heritage, who have campaigned for more funding or the future survival of individual airframes?

I tend to agree with Flood the coverage of what has been (often literally) unearthed is as good as non-existant these days. The sort of coverage in Flypast has changed over the years…
I like the amount of news that appears in Flypast but I prefer the wider range of topics in Aeroplane but then I’m not as heavily into WW2 stuff as seems to be the regular content in Flypast. Can’t say I’m a big fan though of some of the recent themes appearing in Aeroplane as part of their new look.
However I find this forum an invaluable place to find out information and witness some stunning photos. Cheers all.

Neither provides much in the way of archaeology anymore – not like Flypast used to…
And it does (as I have said before) seem like parts of Flypast have turned into the aviation version of Hello magazine – here is the aeroplane now, here it is from a different angle, here it is with owner, here it is flying, here is it before restoration, here it is when in service (or one very similar), here it is being restored, here it is in flight again… It has become almost so consistant I am surprised they don’t have a template made up and just fill it every edition (or maybe they do?;)).
Am I a heratic?

I don’t think you really can quantify which magazine is better that the other.
Certainly they both have their plus points and also negatives. It’s somewhat like trying to work out why some people are faithful to Vauxhall and some Fords. I would say that some of the more lurid crash photographs in Aeroplane and speculation before AAIB reports hasn’t done them any favours.
The twenty years since FlyPast started has seen rapidly changing times in preservation and whilst the future prospects for places like Duxford are good , smaller groups will increasingly be under threat as insurance.Health & Safety and land values take effect.
How this is reported and what positive help the press can give will be very interesting.

Thats only true in part – both magazines have played their part in preservation. In the early days, Flypast tended more towards static and museum preservation, and aeroplane to flyers. There is still a difference between the two, though it has narrowed.

Bruce, I think that Flypast supports grass roots preservation and the efforts of individuals alot more. It certainly provides welcome sponsorship of my beloved CockpitFest!

Don’t forget ‘Control Column’ the magazine that first recorded the comings and goings of aircraft preservation.
As for Flypast-Aeroplane, their horses for different courses and compliment each other well, although I feel Flypast has lost the lead it once had in terms of Preservation news. The recent G-ASXX Lancaster article was superb though.

If it wasnt for the cover of each magazine, they have almost the same content every month…
Aeroplane Monthly gets my vote, if only for featuring more UK based articles. Flypast tends to pad out the mag with trivia from across the pond….
But as I say, I read both, but it’s like reading the same mag twice!

Magazines are commercial enterprises – not flag wavers for the preservation movement.

Why don’t you convert this into a poll with all the main magazines, rather than create a slagging-off forum? That way we can all cast our vote anonymously.
constructive critisism and debate is not slagging-off, but what the heck :p
