Which Maintenance unit ?

Hi all

Anyone know which Maintenance unit covered North Norfolk in early 1945 ?
and where the remains of any crashed aircraft would be taken for disposal.
The aircraft I am researching was Cat. E which I believe means destroyed and I would like to know the most likely fate of the airframe.
Thanks.
Andy

The ORBs are kept at the National Archives at Kew (they will be in a file starting AIR 29/), though MU ORBs are very brief and when I went through the ones that covered the north of England found little of any use. You could be lucky and find that the MU that covered Norfolk wrote lots about their work.

There may be a mention in the local flying units ORB if they sent out the airfield ambulance of crash crew, I have found that in a couple of ORBs where aircraft from other units which crashed within a couple of miles of an airfield were mentioned.

Hi Ross
I have the accident forms from Hendon and one form which lists the date of manufacture , batch no. and squadron. At the bottom of this form it states SOC on around 22nd Feb 1945 which is around a month after the crash. Would this be due to a delay in the paperwork or would the airframe have been taken away for storage prior to disposal ? The accident form states destroyed but there must have still been some large parts to be disposed of and I would be interested to know where they were disposed of.

Thanks

Andy

Hi Andy,

What was the aircraft serial?

Another source is the Form 78 held at the RAF Museum, Hendon.

This details the units that the aircraft was transferred to and includes all MUs. This would narrow down the MU for you.

Hi Alan
Thanks for the reply. Where are the ORB’s stored ? Is it feasible to search for any Norfolk entries or is that too big a task (Never searched the ORB’s) or do I need to find out which unit covered this area at this time ? Is it possible that a team was sent out from a local airfield ??? Sorry so many questions but I would like to know where this aircraft ended its days.

Thanks

Andy.

See the following: http://forum.keypublishing.co.uk/showthread.php?t=61254

From my experience of MU records you are very unlikely to find any useful information, I spent a day going through the ORBs for a number of MUs a few weeks back and the info they put was no exactly good.
