WHICH VULCAN DISPLAY

Having been fortunate to see XH558 display a number of times, there is one appearance that happens to stand out, and it was NOT a formal display. On 1 September 2012 White Waltham held its annual Members’ Day and I happened to note it was at Shoreham that day. So, with the aid of a colleague, the aircraft was persuaded to make a pass at White Waltham when en route back to Doncaster. Actually, Martin Withers (a speaker at the club a number of times) did a circuit as well, no doubt surprising many airfield neighbours with its noisy climb out! That was ‘different’ indeed!

RAF Henlow some years ago. John Jordan was displaying in his Stearman non-radio and the show was running late so the Vulcan had to hold off until John finished. When it did arrive I guess the captain was hacked off as it did the noisiest, lowest Vulcan display I’ve ever seen. I think this was the show when the BBMF Lancaster went home on three. I agree that this year’s September Duxford display was really good.

Waddington 2008 – first post restoration public display and it flew a pass of the station with PA474. I’m still using a photo of that as the background on my laptop.

That would probably be my pick too. The atmosphere across the airfield was electric, everyone standing up in silence (aside from the applause!) paying attention to nothing apart from 558.

Although the display at Clacton this year was amazing. Standing at the end of the pier and the aircraft performing a wingover very close…

In the past several great displays but none to touch the Farnborough vertical climb from take-off and then the barrel roll, because it was the first time a few thousand of us had seen anything like it. As for this year, Dunsfold, her first appearance there, without a doubt.:D

Apologies – just realised the title only refers to XH558…but I’ll leave my comment anyway because I’ll never forget it that display!!

The V force reunion at Newark air museum in April.
Standing there with a load of people I had’nt seen since my days on the line and 44(R) Sqdn at RAF Waddington.
The “Tin Triangle” flying around topped the day off.

1990’s vulcan

Well my memory of the Vulcan goes back to the 1990’s Warbirds at Wroughton Mrs Beachcomber was using the facilities just as the Vulcan was passing over shaking the cubicle she was in, she came out uttering what was that!

Nearly forgot, Cranfield PFA in formation with the Dead Sparrows on what was billed as her last display in the RAF. Was in the Pub garden enjoying a pint and watching the show…… And it was a damn good pint too.

Windermere 2009 – Vulcan low down in the Lake District, what’s not to like about that?

Another vote for waddington, Saturday 2011.
I have also enjoyed just about every take off and landing at DSA this year 🙂

The best for me was Waddington Saturday 2011 – just like the VDF days.

Agreed. I’ve been lucky enough to see 558 a few times in her second career and this stood out as a great display. A close second would be seeing her take off from Finningley a few weeks ago, the last time I saw her do that was her last RAF display there. Third would be any of her visits to us at Elvington 😀

Of the current frame, Victory Show simulated Falklands bombing run a couple of years ago, they felt the explosion in the Vulcan, big bang huge flames, really impressive…. Of old, mass scramble at Waddington or RAF Odiham families day, turning within the airfield boundary side on..

A Vulcan 4 ship scramble at a Finningley Airshow in about 1963/64 and the time when a 617 Squadron Vulcan commemorating the Dams Raid flew over the Derwent Dam wall and then went skyward at about 45 degrees setting off all the car alarms, particularly as we were looking down on it from the hillside.

When it went and frightened the Argies (a) on the Falklands, and (b) in Argentina. That was what it was designed to do. Anything else is irrelevant!

Only seen her once at a display since restoration. Fairford a few years ago. Still an impressive take off come wing over!
Seen her in the distance over Fleet, and Farnborough. Can hear her at Farnborough from Yateley.

Most impressive display. 1989-90. A low cloud overcast North Weald take off which could be measured in a) how many car alarms went off and b) how many chickens died.

Most memorable. 90’s. Being on the end of the pier at Southend one sunny airshow day when she flew over head. Or maybe the Great Warbirds Displays. Happy days!
