whirlwind L6844 with 263Sqn

Hi All,
I am trying to find my whirlwind stuff and keep getting side tracked
There are decals that show L6844 as HE-V of 263 Sqn
and the aircraft movement card shows it with 263Sqn in ’42
but all the books dont show it as having been with 263Sqn
Anyone got any more info ?
cheers
jerry

Hi Jerry, Peter, & co.

Jerry, look at the upper right-most entry- I think this reads “Located U/S at AFDU…”

Something I’ve never really understood: what is the distinction between “Taken on Charge” (above section) and “Unit to whom Allotted” (lower section)? It seems that if something is allotted to you, it is under your charge?

Hi
thanks for thoughts, I see the CRD at 6 jan 42 before AFDU
but I cant see the bit that shows it unserviceable at AFDU.

is that what the 1623B entry means, un serviceable ?

cheers

My interpretation of the Movement Card:-

Aircraft located in an unserviceble condition at the Air Fighter Development Unit at Duxford as at 24 January 1942.

Aircraft allotted to 263 Squadron at Fairwood Common on 27 February 1942.

Aircraft converted to an Instructional Airframe and issued to 4 School of Technical Training at St Athan 13 April 1942.

It is therefore very unlikely in this seven week window that this aircraft flew with 263 Squadron or even arrived at Fairwood Common…in my view.

Is it possible that it was never entered in the squadron documentation. Such omissions sometimes happen in wartime. Just one of the hazards that historains and researchers run into.
