Whirlwind Operational Limitations Plate, finished…

Here it is, it’s the best I can do without getting hold of any further information. Brass effect, stamped data, fitted screws, added “Peregrine I”, (Thanks Pete…;)) and some light scratching…

Comments welcome please Gentlemen, if you know something that should be changed… 😉

There appears to have been a number of fakes floating about supposidly of the peregrine engine, i seen a complete set back last year at beaulieu car auto jumble so you are not the only one knocking out these labels.

They are only fake if they are being sold as genuine, otherwise they are replicas or whatever the term is.

More Peregrine plates.

D’oh… 😮

I don’t want to ask, but I must…

Where do they go, engine block? Rocker covers? Are they original or replicas… 🙂

Sorry vulture it’s just I’m not use to seeing Whirlwind bits…

Is there a story how you came to have them?

yep my Merlin III plates are nicely engraved too…as are my lims plates from Battle, Hampden, Blenheim etc

Do you reckon they are engraved or etched? They are not stamped as I first thought, and looking with a magnifying glass it has the appearance of lettering done with a pantograph machine.

Also, the Rolls-Royce part number stamped on the back is D12427. I would be interested to know if an identical plate for another Mark of Merlin carries the same number, which would confirm that the data is added later.

I really should get out more, or at least away from this darned computer.

Stuart.
Attached pic of an original as per your PM.
All the plates I have seen have been very neatly stamped, so some sort of machine must have been involved.
I have not seen a hand-written one before.
I think you have got it spot-on.

Sorry about the (lack of) quality, the camera, which is a Nikon, isn`t auto-focussing properly!

Pete

Brilliant Pete, it’s like you said the data was stamped with a machine, thank God I don’t have to do the data over again. That plate matches the one in the later Whirlies (See Below) from P6984 and after, so looks like I’ll have another one to replicate, but thanks to you it’s fairly easy… 😉

Thanks again Pete

ah I see, in that case try jiggling the stamped letters a little bit for the more handmade look

Thanks David, it’s projects like yours that has driven us to make this virtual Whirlwind something special, something that will bring a lost aircraft back to the aviation world for all to see…

Mind you saying that she’s been kicking and screaming and been nothing but trouble from the very start, anyone would think she didn’t want to be brought back… 😉

Very nice. Keep going with this level of this level of quality, and your project will be a good one.

very nice, might be more perfect than the originals though 😀

How did you do it, was it etched and then engraved?

Nither I’m afraid, it only exists in my computer… 😉 Though I’m really quite taken aback that you thought it was real, thanks Smirky…:D

No I’ve made this for a 3D model were making for a flight sim, this will be put into the cockpit of our virtual Whirlwind. We’re trying to make it as accurate as possible, this is only one piece of many hundreds that we need to make before we can fly her in the IL-2 Series Sim.
