Whirlwinds at Elstree

A very early memory I have is exploring what i’m sure were a load of dumped Whirlwind helicopters at Elstree. This would have been mid-seventies.

Can anyone shed any light on what they were?

Great when photos like this pop up.

Thanks for posting.

Is it really a first post after twelve years membership ?  I think the counter is up the creek…

They were S-881 to S-887, the entire batch. They arrived at Elstree March – April 1975. I saw them all 9.3.78 by which time the booms had been removed. Black tarpaulins had originally covered the cockpits and noses, but wind had blown them around by 78.

S-881 to S-887, S-55 RDAF, Elstree 9.3.78.

The survivors went down to Weston super Mare for storage and ended up being taken in lieu of debt. Two remain, both with the Helicopter Museum.

Ah, yes they were silver and dayglo I think. I seem to recall there were quite a few of them, and they were all near the first entrance. Thanks for the info.

Were they silver with dayglo markings? If so, former Danish Air Force Sikorsky S-55’s, two of which have since returned to Denmark and been restored.

Might have been Autair examples. A bunch ended up at Panshanger in mid 70’s.
