White Catalina

What happened to the cat that crashed in Southampton? I only know it half sunk or close to. Other than that i have no idea whether its being restored, scrapped, completely sunk..?

Any word would be appreciated 🙂

Very interesting photos Mark12!

Getting back to the White Cat, here she is landing at Zoersel in 1993 or thereabouts.

I, personally, prefer silver Cats over white ones. :diablo: Especially this fully airworthy Dutch machine PH-PBY. Pics of it during the first public outing at Lelystad in September last year.

Oh, I just hope this returns to Duxford for Legends in this scheme. We may even get two Catalinas in formation.

“I mean this most sincerely folks”

Here is a shot of perhaps the first Catalina on the British Register G-APZA.

Somehow the ‘bush telegraph’ told us that this was at Croyden and off we all pedalled.

My understanding at the time was that it belonged to Hughie Green of TV’s ‘Opportunity Knocks’ fame.

These are further negatives from the ‘biscuit tin’ and I note are 35mm. These would be perhaps from my first roll on my new ‘Agimatic’ camera circa 1960. My dad had taken me over to Edgware to this cheap camera shop run by a guy called Stanley Kalms. I think he went on to bigger things founding a chain called ‘Nixons’ or something similar.

PH-PBY in its previous colourscheme

When she first appeared, she was flown under her Canadian registration. Later on the registration PH-PBY was applied and some small changes were made: blisters installed, rudder painted orange.

Correct, she was camouflaged with orange triangle markings before overhaul

Was PH-PBY at Duxford some years ago, at the Classic Fighters Show (pre-Legends days)?
Seem to remember one being there in Dutch colours, instead of Plain Sailings Cat.

For anybody interested in Catalinas, Stuart Powney is doing a talk about ‘Plane Sailing’ and their involvement with them on the 27th Jan at Sywell- somebody out there probably has more precise details.

Dont know if this shortcut will work but show this Cat in a way very few people have seen

Obviously staged, but dramatic none the less. Interesting to note no flaps for the landing.

Next questions are when, where and why ?

You never seen the Spielberg film, Always?? 😮 This is at the start of it.

I haven’t seen it in years!

As far as I know the Cat doesn’t have flaps.

Czech this out – The Velvet Revolution

Even the President of the Czech Republic, Vaclav Havel, got to ride in the Catalina at the Roudnice show in 1993. 😎

His security guys however didn’t seem too pleased about it. 🙂

The Greenpeace cat in 2001, before and after repaint. She flew out not long after the repaint picture was taken.

Does anyone know the current status of either Catalina?
I was down at Lee On Solent on the 30th December, and could see, from the main road, both Cat’s outside.
The ex-Plain Sailing one still without the wing, and I couldn’t see much of the ex-Greenpeace one except for the wing and the rudder.
