Playing around with Nimrod sideviews at the moment, came across this overall white Nimrod on wings pallate.
http://wp.scn.ru/en/ww3/s/621/9/0/6
It says its XV235 of 42 Squadron, does anyone have photos of it.?
What is the dark circle on the fin?
cheers

Now that’s a proper Nimrod!:p
Indeed! I always used to think from the front the the ‘rod in that scheme had a big smiley face, especially with the double bubble skull shape cross section. 😀

Wouldn’t it be great if just one of the collections that has a Nimrod, just one, would repaint it in the old colours!:)

The Nimrods were up on the V-Bomber ORP, complete with the black noses which they had for a while.
Like this one, East dispersals early 1970s

Fantastic period, and the beginning of the last great era for St Mawgan.

Reading through this thread has brought back many happy memories of Nimrod trips at St Mawgan in the mid 1970’s, thankfully way before the RAF’s subsequent demise and almost total disappearance from the south-west peninsular. It has also reminded me of a tale I was told by an RAF colleague who was posted to SM just after I left in 1977.
With amusement, he told me that prior to painting a particular Nimrod, engineering staff discovered that the paint was the wrong colour, a fact they quickly reported up through the local chain of command. However, as the details on the paperwork (or labels) was entirely correct and therefore in accordance with then current Nimrod paint specifications, the person in charge was content that it should be used – so it was!
As my memory doesn’t extend to the colour of the paint used or whether the whole aircraft was affected, I rang my ex RAF friend and asked him if he remembered the incident. He said he did, but as it was over 30 years ago, he was sorry that he could not recall any of the specific details. Consequently, I’m afraid that I cannot add anything substantial to the white Nimrod debate. Something to ponder, however?
A very interesting thread. Regards…..Paul

It’s certainly true that many enthusiasts always associate Nimrod with Kinloss
Ah Kinloss, the crossroads of ASW, with a cast of similar calibre!

One in the eye for that “other” Nimrod base that often claimed the first rites.
It certainly claimed the last rites…..

It’s certainly true that many enthusiasts always associate Nimrod with Kinloss when it was of course introduced into the RAF at good ol’ St.Mawgan. There used to be plenty of photographs around of the press day. The Nimrods were up on the V-Bomber ORP, complete with the black noses which they had for a while. Ahh, bless…

XV230 consequently became the first aircraft to enter operational service with the RAF when it arrived at St Mawgan on October 2nd 1969 for the type’s newly formed Operational Conversion Unit (OCU).

Nice picture of ’46 in the wrong brown here Al, http://www.globalaviationresource.com/reports/2010/nimrod/images/10.jpg.
It comes from this site which has some really nice early Nimrod pictures, http://www.globalaviationresource.com/reports/2010/nimrod.php
ISTR that there was Nimrod that was left in a predominantly black colour while on paint/corrosion trials?

Having worked at RAF Kinloss from 1975 to 2010, I’ve certainly never seen (or even heard rumours of) an all-white Nimrod before.
The only colour abberation was the unique, but short-lived, XV246 chocolate brown sh***hawk…

XV235 in the white and grey and with the 42 sqn badge on the tail.
I believe this is the aircraft that is going to be displayed at Cosford, would love to see it in the white and grey, would even forgive it not having the correct aerials and bumps for that scheme!
I don’t know the source of this picture so apologies for that, will credit if person steps forward.

As mentioned, Nimrods (as indeed later Shacks – W34 ‘Lulu’) were always capable of dropping buckets of sunshine, certainly in their Cold-War maritime days, I think the main weapon was the B57.
The red ‘N’ Nuclear commit button is on the control yoke.
There’s a white painted Shack running now – stick a bucket of sunshine in it’s bomb bay. There’s a thought, albeit a bit pointless!
