Following Hindenberg’s success with his Stirling bits thread I thought i’d start a Whitley one!
There are thousands of individual parts – I thought i’d start with some of the biggest bits.
The first recovery we did was in 2001. We were helped by the Montrose Air Station Museum, Brian Dickinson, Steve Boyd and Peter Babbs. We started with the wings, so i’ll post those pictures first.

What’s the status on the Baltic Whitley? Will it ever be recovered or even, is it substantial enough for a recovery?
Cees
Hi Cees
I posted something a while back on the Baltic Whitley – see here http://forum.keypublishing.co.uk/showthread.php?t=61771&highlight=Whitley+baltic
As far as I am aware no parts of this aircraft have been found in recent years and this is from the diver who was actively searching for it off Denmark.
The website was hosted by geocities which is now defunct. It would have been nice to have continued it but I have always found the forum to be more productive. Savings will all continue to go into the rebuild… I’m about a month or two away from getting the new workshop going.
Hope that helps….

Elliott
Did you ever get the turret cupola from Fenland?Laurence
Hi Laurence – thanks to the heads up you provided I met with members of the museum and they have very kindly allowed me to borrow one of the panels needed to have a new set made. This will allow us to get the best possible match, rather than making a pattern which with the best will in the world would not be as accurate. Thanks very much once again for your help Laurence – it is greatly appreciated. Eric Cox was the driving force behind this in the museum and he really bent over backwards to help me. Doug Pike also did a grand job removing the panel without breaking it – a feat not to be underestimated!

Baltic
I read in a recent newspaper that a path is to be cleared of mines in the baltic for a gas pipeline, some underwater robot will find them then they will be destroyed.perhaps the ship will look out for aircraft parts!!There is a german group protesting about this due to environmental concerns.Apprently there are mines from both wars still at large there.

I thought that as soon as I saw it.
There were some severely crashed bits of Barracuda that they were able to “uncrash”.

That’s a marvelous contribution. So great to see.
The scale of this project never ceases to amaze Elliott.
Out of curiosity, what are the biggest, or most significant, items on your “wanted” list?

This Whitley cowling popped up on ebay a while ago. It’s the bottom cowling and sits underneath one of the Merlin Xs. It was found at Chepstow Racecourse which was the site of an old Maintenance Unit – it’s not clear which Whitley it came from. I am indebted to Ian_ who helped me out and picked it up for me – thank you Ian… It is upside down in the second picture – the square cutout is for the radiator door (which was also included) – there were air scoops fitted on both sides.
As Ian said, a useful piece of Whitley!
One of the scoops and the radiator door can be seen in the b&w picture. I’m pretty confident that with some hard work all of this material can be re-used.
