Whitley update

After a long wait we have finally collected our front turret cupola – it is now stripped and awaiting blast cleaning – hopefully this will be finished this week.

On another note, it has taken several years but yesterday I was able to pick up a second Whitley throttle box. It needs a lot of work and has now joined the retoration queue (which is quite long at the moment).

Thanks very much Mike

That’s much appreciated.

Hi Elliott,

The turret is looking great!

I got a little sidelined, but I haven’t forgotten about the Palmer valve box details I was working out for you. I plan to jump back onto that little project soon.

Cheers,

Hi Cees

Thanks – we’re not using filler in any restored components – the aircraft is being rebuilt with an emphasis on conservation.

As for the centre section – yes this is the part that contains the inner wings and the fuselage bolts into. I’ll send you some pics when I get all the parts together in one place.

Cheers

Hi Elliott,

Looking great, fantastic to see these bits coming together again. There’s some pitting on the gun arm casting, will you be filling this with compound filler or something or will you keep it as it is.

With centre section, you mean the wing centresection. Is this the heart of the airframe that bolts all other section onto?

Keep us updated on this great project. It would harm if you regularly post a wants list, it helped David’s Sea Hornet project quite a bit.

Cheers

Cees

Hi Seafuryfan

The work is being subcontracted out – but the main locations are London and Norwich.

Hi Fouga23

Here is a taste of some of the parts in store. Here is also a pic of our new Merlin X (a rare beast in complete condition).

As you can see there is still a lot of work to be done.

Nice! Do you have any overview pictures of all the pieces/parts you have in store?

Hey Mike

Alas not – haven’t seen a Vickers K for quite a while. I’m not too worried about this at the moment 🙂

The whole thing has been blasted – it’s now being primed (slowly!) and should be back together again – good as new – in about 2 weeks (minus glazing).

I’ll post some pics when it’s done (and send you as many as i can take).

Cheers

Hi Elliott,

Just kidding about the spares, but I’d certainly love to see more pictures of the cupola.

Have you been able to locate an actual Vickers “K” gun or replica?

Hi Mike

It belonged to a friend – took a long time to find a suitable trade however…

I can certainly send you a ton of pics of it if this helps?

Cheers mate

Nice finds Elliott!!

I definitely like the cupola, any spares? I’d love to hear the story behind that find.

How’s the rest of the turret coming along?

If only – stranger things have happened.

I wonder if his garden shed is built around a Whitley fuselage !
