Who are the Villains?

Okay, so we know who are the heroes in preserving our aviation heritage, but who are the villains? Who was responsible for what – that precious airframe scrapped or archive tossed on the fire?

Remember – keep it clean and legal.

Steve, Thanks for the kind offer to ‘get even’ with the despised St Ives Sand & Gravel. As DH Fan said, it was this company which made transformed/obliterated so many of the American bomber bases across East Anglia, the main frenzy of destruction seemingly taking place in the 1970’s. Many were very substantially intact until that time.

It would be gratifying if a few were left unmolested, but as was observed here recently, ‘that book’ is now so dated (1978) that one would probably need local knowledge to be aware of what is actually still there. I suppose Multimap could be of use, if you click on aerial photo overlays.

IIRC, they are the firm that converted a lot of the old runways into hardcore for building motorways. One of the reasons Davidstow in Cornwall is still intact is it’s so far away it’s not worth going to dig it up.

St Ives Sand & Gravel. Read ‘Airfields of the Eigth’, and you’ll know why !

Haven’t got that one, but as I live in St Ives and could quite readily shout abuse at ’em on the way to and from work, could you please tell me why…? 😀

And what would Avros finest know about perfection appart from when Saddler scores, God what a geek anyway he probably couldn’t find out how to work the spray gun until he was told that was what the airline was for 🙂 🙂

Come to think of it avros finest is a bit of a villain as well.

G.B.H to spray guns.

Shocking.

Sacrifices have to be made in the search for perfection, you’ll learn boy.

Er.. I think not.

That honour really does belong to Denis Healey. Tw*t (Healey – not Snapper)

Moggy

Actually, you are both right. Duncan Sandys’ White Paper of 1957 declared manned aircraft absolete, and undoubtedly played a large part in the decline of Britain’s aircraft production industry 🙁

Well who ever decided to destroy all those thousands of WWII fighters & bombers at Kingman ,Arizona after the war. Ok I know they needed the steel for building new houses for all the returing GI’s after the war..but wish they would have left these babies alone!!!! If you have ever seen the photographs of 100’s of B-17 & 24’s sitting out in the dry warm dun at Kingman after the war and think what became of them…not fair ..just not fair for them to suffer this horrible fate!!!
