Just wondering which airport has the longest runway ? I thought it would be one that the shuttle can land at.The best i could find was 15’013 ft at Andrews AFB.Can anyone beat that ? If u can thats one hell of a long runway !!!

Lyndon.

RE: Who has the longest ?
Banjul (in the Gambia) is also a shuttle diversion field. I have landed there myself and although it is very long it is so rough that you have to brace your feet on the rudder pedals to stop them bouncing off! There is also a problem with snakes basking on the runway!

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 02-09-02 AT 10:19Â AM (GMT)]Thanks for that information.I was sure there was a place in Spain which was equipped for shuttle landings.I remember hearing about it on the news when a shuttle was not able to come back to earth due to bad storms around Florida for a few days. They talked about a few alternatives if the bad weather were to stay,Moron Air Base must of been one of the alternatives.

It is at Moron, Spain.
Morón Air Base, Spain, Home of the 496th Air Base Squadron
It’s runway is 3595 meters long.
The Moron Air Base is a joint-use U.S. Air Force and Spanish Air Force Base and was designated a TAL site in 1984. Moron Air Base serves as a weather alternate for both low and high inclination launches.
The Moron AB is located about 35 miles southeast of Seville and 75 miles northeast of Naval Station Rota. Although Moron is close to the foothills of the Sierra de Ronda mountain chain, most of the surrounding countryside is flat with a few hills and shallow valleys. Elevations vary from 200 to 400 feet above sea level. The weather is generally good with no associated unusual weather phenomena.
The Moron AB has an 11,800 by 200-foot runway with 1000-foot overruns and a 50-foot asphalt-stabilized shoulders. The runway is equipped with Shuttle-unique visual landing aids and a Microwave Landing System (MLS), a Tactical Air Control and Navigation (TACAN) system, a remote weather tower and a Shuttle Orbiter Arresting System (SOAS).
Communications at Moron includes three INMARSAT satellite circuits, US Defense Communication Net (DCN) lines and Spanish commercial telephone lines. Internet capability is available through the base Large Area Network (LAN).

RE: Who has the longest ?
Isn’t there some runway in Spain, which in the event of an emergancy or prolonged bad weather at Cape Canavral,is deemed suitable by NASA for a shuttle landing?

Mate that link doesn’t show what I’m talking about, give me a bit of time and I’ll see what I can find.

RE: Who has the longest ?
Huston and Nevada are the other two GD, and yeah you’re right about Sydney mainly cause of the flight path and length as well as being suitable to carry heavy weight A/c at any time. KSA’s runway is made from 1Meter thick re-inforced concreate, that’s why we never have to close it down for repairs 😉
Though they are building the new Space port up in the North of Queensland!

RE: Who has the longest ?
Sydney airport’s RWY 34L/16R is one of only 4 runways on the planet that NASA deems suitable to land the spaceshuttle on. Edwards is the primary one. Not sure about the other 2.

RE: Who has the longest ?
I would say Area 51 wud have a long one because alien spaceships have a unknown landing distance and if it is the size of the usss enterprise it must have a long distance and around 200 wheels!

RE: Who has the longest ?
Benair… I knew about Elvington!!!! It’s runway is so thick, because it’s built on soft ground… so they just kept dumping material down until the runway stopped subsiding!!

RE: Who has the longest ?
Mongu i suspect it was an error…not sure. Here is the length of Area 51s longest runway…. it says its about 3,800 meters or 2.6 miles that roughly size of 42 football fields.
here are a couple of links that might interest you…

I think its the game Mongu,on FS98 I can’t take an ATP off at Southampton,Guernsey or the Isle Of Man when they odviously fly there.

RE: Who has the longest ?
I’ve been playing round with an airline simulation called “airline” from www.airlinesimulation.com
There seems to be lots of major international airports (eg. HKG) which have runways too short for the A340-500 and -600. Also some UK airports cannot really take 737’s and A320’s (eg. IOM, JER, ABZ) despite the fact that such aircraft DO operate to these airports.
What I am asking, is are these runways really so short or is it a fault in the game?

RE: Who has the longest ?
Officially Area 51 in Nevada.
Unofficially, check out Nazca in Peru, strips of land that are 1.2 miles wide and 4.8 miles long, speculation has it that they are tied in with Extra Terrestrial activity in the past, fact is, they are there and can support a/c!

RE: Who has the longest ?
I would agree. NASA is v.long. I havent heard of one bigger, although Area51 might have, but im not going to ask for the dimensions!!

Oh and Softlad…The title of your post could cause people to get the ‘wrong end of the stick’! lol

RE: Who has the longest ?
Yes I would too. But the one at Area 51 is sose to be pretty impressive…I’ll be buggered if anyone can find the dimensions for it though!
The runway at Elvington in York is very long (unsure on exact measurement) but at one end, the concrete is said to be 12-15ft deep as it is the UK’s emergency landing site for the space shuttle. and…not a lotta people know that!

Ben
