Anybody like to guess the name of the person who owns the most planes? This is in the right forum but the name might be more familiar to Historic readers!

The unequivocal answer is the US taxpayer

No.
I really mean it, chaps! We’re not going through all that again. No way! 😡

OK, i wont mention the apprentice again.
Back on subject – i suspect the vast majority of aircraft are purchased then leased back – thats the usual financial model when a company has an asset worth millions of pounds.
So i would guess that most are “owned” by finance companies – as others have already suggested
(almost) back on subject – many years ago i was introduced to a chap who’s job was repossesing aircraft for leasing companies. He was an ex-army officer who went along with the necessary pilots, co-pilots and a team of engineers to check over and fly off in planes from airports around the world.
He also had with him a legal eagle equipped with all the legal paperwork, a lot of cash and various corporate credit cards to pay outstanding airport charges and buy fuel etc. He said that much of the time, the aircraft was stuck where it stood because the operating company had gone bust and the airport would not clear the aircraft to leave until landing and parking charges had been settled.
Quite a job – i guess he was very highly paid.

If yes, then he owns 51% of Virgin Airlines. But not 100%.

American (685)
Lufthansa (incl. cargo, cityline,Swiss, Augsburg, Germanwings, Eurowings, Air Dolomiti,Contact air: 534)
Northworst (oops…WEST) (513)
Southwest (477)
Delta (470)
United (460)
DHL (including all the subsidiaries 420)
FedEx (403)
SkyWest (400)

I don’t think ILFC belongs to its CEO. Maybe the English Queen is the winner, because maybe the Royal Air Force belongs technically to her. Like with the Royal Navy: Her Majesty Ship (H.M.S.).

Does Virgin Group belong to Sir Richard?

Thought Lufthansa had a fleet off 246? Or you counting the airline cargo and cityline aswel? James
Yes,James that figure includes Cityline, Cargo and all the subsidiaries, and a/c on order (145 + 30 options)

So, counting the major candidates:
Tom Ryan does not own Ryanair – he is a shareholder, but the rest of shares are traded.
Sir Stelios does not own Easyjet – he is the biggest single shareholder, but even he and his family members together have only 17 % or so.
Sir Richard Branson does not own Virgin – Singapore is 49 % shareholder. Virgin Group is 51 %. Does Virgin Group belong to Sir Richard?
While bmi owns a few Embraers, the rest are leased from a holding company totally owned by sir Michael Bishop. Is sir Michael Bishop the biggest airplane owner in the world? Any other large owners?

More like the British taxpayer my friend!!

As for one person owning aeroplanes, I seem to remember that I read somewhere that bmi and bmiBaby aircraft are all owned by Sir Michael Bishop’s holding company (owned totally by him) and then leased to bmi and Baby.
To the best of my knowledge – which is admittedly small(!) – the only aircraft fully owned by BMI are the Embraer fleet, this lack of full ownership of aircraft apparently caused some degree of consternation with the CAA some years ago, not sure what the issue was though.

I think you could safely cut that number in half, Scotty. 🙂
Not counting Lufthansa Cityline, of course. 😉
