Who shot down Franz Von Werra?

Hello Chaps,
According with Osprey Aircraft of the Aces Bf109E, F/Lt Patterson Hughes was the pilot who shot down Von Werra Messerschmitt but in others sources P/O ‘Stapme’ Stapleton was. I saw a couple of Air Prints (Nutkins, Howard Worsley) that shows P/O Stapleton pass over his victim (Von Werra) also on Wikipedia you can read that.
On 5th September occurred this event but I have a list of Stapleton’s victories and he has not any victory (confirmed, share, probable) on that date.

Wikipedia states that von Werra lived until 1941 – where he disappeared on a routine patrol, possibly down to engine failure.

Franz Von Werra

That’s certainly the story I’d read about him previously.

Von Werra

[The Battle of Britain. net seems to leave a lot to be desired in correct details — for example it states SATURDAY 31st AUGUST — this was in fact a FRIDAY— how do I know — well I was there — when at about 4.30pm I saw Hurricane P3119 –( P/Off JLW Ellecombe ) after it crashed landed near my home — I saw Hurricane R4213 go down in flames, killing Sgt.Feliks Gmur,— I saw a He111 which they shot down, & landed a couple of miles from my home, — it was one of 10 en-route to attack Vauxhall Motors at Luton, where vast damage ensued, along with many casualties in that area.
Official records name Flt/Lt John Terrance aged 24. of 41Sqdn Hornchurch in Spitfire P9428 who shot-down Von Werra at 10am on 5th Sept. 1940 — crash-landing at Winchet Hill Loves farm, Marden Kent — Terrance was killed a few hours later that day,( 3.25pm ) after colliding in mid-air with Spitfire R6635 flown by Sqdn/Ldr. H R L Hood aged 32 yrs, over Bonvills farm Benfleet Essex.
Von Werra lived a further 4 yrs before perishing in Oct. 1944

Which reminds me, I’ve not seen the film The One That Got Away for ages!!

The von Werra shoot-down is covered in David Ross’s book “Stapme” – which is sadly roosting in my loft at present!

The Wickipedia reference you mention quotes Stapleton himself describing the action in which von Werra was shot down on 5th September – seems fairly conclusive?:

“…….During my dive from altitude I spotted a Spitfire at about 6,000′ diving vertically, half inverted, towards the ground, it’s tail shot away. I then spotted a lone 109 in the same airspace as an RAF pilot descending by parachute. I latched onto the German and pursued him at low-level over the Kent countryside. As I fired short bursts he attempted to shake me off but I could see my tracer striking his aircraft and I closed in. I remember at one stage being concerned that there was a village in my line of fire. He had nowhere to go but down and eventually force-landed in a field. I flew low over the site. The German was soon apprehended, initially by the unarmed cook from the local searchlight battery!”

‘The Bf109 of Oberlt Franz von Werra Gruppe Adjutant of Staab II/JG3 was shot down over Marden in Kent by P/O B.G.Stapleton of 603 Squadron Hornchurch, although it is believed that the Bf109 sustained original damage after being hit by gunfire from the Spitfire of P/O G.H.Bennions of 41 Squadron Hornchurch.’
