Who, what, why, where, when?

Ok, I know the “what”, but everything else escapes me!

Anyone know who the pilots were, or what squadron the Spitfire is from?

I can’t remember which book I saw that photo in, and I can’t find it among my Spitfire books, but I swear I remember the caption saying it was an OTU Spit

where and when

X4381 is a Mark I Spitfire.

The X series was in use from 1940. This aircraft is one of a batch of 500 (X4009-4997) fairly early in the set. Though Robertson (British Military Aircraft Serials) gives few additional details, a number of Spitfires in this series were built as PR variants (not this one) or subsequently converted to PR, some as late as 1943.

On this scant evidence, “somewhere in England”, circa 1940-1943.
