Who will be remembered for what in 2005?

Now that the 2005 Air Show season is almost at an end I am curious to see what the various aircraft operators (TFC, OFMC, BBMF, RNHF, ARCo, Shuttleworth, HAC, RAC and the many many more) will be remembered for in 2005.

Those who made the great spitfire tail chase at the BOB airshow at Duxford possible. It is something that I will remember from 2005.

Also several meetings with wonderfull people shurely made 2005 an interesting year for me.

I never knew Steve Young, but the regard with which his memory is held by so many here is quite touching.

My high point was getting inside PA474 at the BBMF. I’m still grinning like a schoolboy. Thanks again to Fluffy et al.

1. The Fighter Factory’s Chipmunk’s first ever display at Oshkosh. If anyone has that on video, I’ll buy it.

2. Taking Steve Young up in a Chipmunk and arranging two surprise visits for him in one day – with r.Weaver and also his cousin and uncle.

Everyone who took part in the 65th anniversary of the Battle of Britain at RAF northolt in september, Veterans especially. RAF REGIMENT did a parade with mixed dress(old and new) which was superb, along with a Spitfire /Hurricane flypast that had to be one of the best ive ever seen with any aircraft promptly followed by a Typhoon of 29(f) sqn. I met loads of veterans and cheekily asked them to sign my Hurricane print which they did with pleasure along with telling me of the times when they were all young lads flying and fighting in the Spitfires,Hurricanes,Blenhiems.. etc. I spoke to John Freeborn and he told me of a friendly fire incident that some of you probably know all about(74sqn spit shooting down a 56sqn Hurri).

personally my abiding memory from this year will be at duxford, Sunday 11th September in the fog and drizzle watching all our brave “boys ” processing around Duxford in the various forms of army transport, and with the eerie drizzle and low cloud covered line of Spits and Hurri’s lurking in a row on the airfield behind them, even though we saw no flying to speak of apart from the chinook and auster, it was a magical event.
also after having read Peter Vachers book, seeing his Hurricane fly was rather splendid too.

Seeing Lusty Lindy at Max-chat at Elvington.
It is the first time that I have seen a V Bomber on Take-off power for many a year.

My Kids (Daughter 5, Son 2) going absolutely mad over the Red Arrows and the Utterly Butterley Team at Elvington, my Daughter’s favourite Aircraft is now a Stearman!! (great taste!)

Ohh, and finally convincing my wife that when I have my mid-life crisis in 2 years time, instead of buying a Porsche, I can get my PPL back…..

I have been fortuinate enough to to fulfill many dreams and fly in many old aircraft this year. I have flown over Whiteman AFB in a Sea Fury and taken air to air photographs of a Skyraider and flown from a Battle of Britain airfield in a P-51.

However it all pales into insignificance when compared to the loss this forum has suffered this year.

Steve Young RIP.
