Whole life sentences and an alternative

The two killers of Lee Rigby have been justly sentenced, though I’m not up to speed as to why one should have received ‘whole life’ and the other, a finite term.

I have a suggestion for a perhaps more merciful solution. More merciful that is, than that which they meted out to their victim.

Any one convicted and sentenced to more than say, thirty years or, to whole life, should have, in their cell, a small – 18 inches by 12 inches, glass doored wall safe. In the locked safe, floodlit from within, should be a bottle of water – changed at suitable intervals – and a lethal pill.

The key to the safe should be in the possession of the convict and available for personal use at any time. The idea is that the State makes the means available and the convict makes the choice. That should be acceptable to the EU provided we’re still members. It will save the taxpayer a whole heap of cash and rid the Earth of those who by their actions have forfeited the right to existence.

I’m just stuffed full of good ideas !

Well, I’ve looked back thru’ your comments and as I’ve written, I can’t see ‘any sensible objections’.

Folk’s c’mon ! My proposal was directed towards those who have no hope of release (whole lifers) and those who have to serve a pre- determined thirty or more years before they can be considered for parole. There is nothing intrinsically wrong with helping the scum on their way – everyone becomes a winner !

They (hopefully) exercise their choice and thus make room for others who don’t deserve to live. Just think for a moment. If this idea caught on judges would start handing out proper sentences of proper duration, the justice system would begin to look as if it means business, the crooks would begin to get worried and all decent people would begin to enjoy a less threatening life on the streets where formally under the old regime you could lose your life for remonstrating with some worthless yob for riding a bike on the pavement.

Support this idea. It is for your own benefit. Paraphrasing Del Boy “You know it makes sense”.

Yes Charlie, letting them top themselves or topping them makes them martyrs, and let’s them off, they will have expected to die at the scene, giving them that pleasure of an early death is a no no, make them suffer for 60 plus years is more of a punishment, not the easy way out. I would also not announce their deaths and bury them within prison grounds.

Exactly, Tony, in the case or terrorists and, as I said, in the case of “civilian” capital criminals, who will be out on parole after a few years and early release a few years later, why on earth would they want to top themselves?

I have still to hear an argument against my objections.

There aren’t any sensible objections that one can sensibly make. If one joins a club (society) then you observe the club’s (societies) rules (laws). If you repeatedly fail to observe the rules (laws) in often the most cruel and barbarous of ways then you will be expelled from the club (society) never again to be allowed in (sent to prison – for an awful long time).

Part of your sentence will include provision for a ‘get out clause’.

Due entirely to the pernicious doctrines of the liberal far left, we have a society that includes a significant number who have little to no understanding of the distinctions between right and wrong. That is just one of the reasons why our prison population will continue to grow making it necessary to build more prisons until eventually we see sense and adopt more realistic deterrent policies.

I am a long way to the right of the liberal far left and posted my objections to the suggestion many posts ago and have not yet seen them refuted.

Re 21

As Baz points out, there are certain practical difficulties associated with the use of a lethal pill. When I wrote the opening comment, I included the possibility of a hypodermic loaded with a dose of something lethal but, again, saw certain practical difficulties, so removed the reference.

The means by which my suggestion is accomplished is largely irrelevant. It wouldn’t be too difficult to devise a foolprrof system with suitable safeguards. The intention is to place the criminal under some pressure of conscience and obligation. If, after long, unending years, the lifer, by some miracle, begins to listen to the moral pressure from his or her conscience or, they are simply tired of life as they live it, by exercising their choice, there is a way out.

Other than from the liberal far left, there can be few objections to this idea. From time to time and most recently, the question of State sponsored euthanasia is taken up by the media. If, from the point of merciful compassion we as a people are prepared at least, to discuss this most emotive subject, are we then to deny the same opportunity albeit for different motives to some of the most depraved menbers of society ?

Let us at least trial it for ten or more years. We just might get rid of a lot of bad people.

Now you are talking – some form of PUNISHMENT, perhaps by deprivation? Have you chatted to the human rights people about it…..?:D

I recon all the bleeding hearts of the Human rights brigade should be put in the same cell. What with them, and a Nanny State, we are just digging ourselves into one big hole,

As religious soldiers of Allah didn’t the murderers of Lee Rigby get a letter from HMG saying the Police would not be interested in prosecuting them?

Tony – I infer that you tend towards the view that prison for capital offenders should be more about punishment than anything else!!

I would close the cell door then weld it shut, next time it would be opened would be to bury them, lunch dinner and breakfast would consist of a choice between bacon butties or porridge with a treat at Christmas of an apple.

I did very early on firstly because it would be illegal and secondly achieve the wrong aims if it was legal.

I do agree that natural justice has been subsumed in the last decade or two by the liberal ascendancy.

Yeah, but I didn’t count you…;o)

….”trampled to death by unicorns “?

Well that’s original if nothing else. It certainly shows how far you are from reality.

And you and your poison pill aren’t?

Unicorns and poison pills with a glass of water in glass cases sitting in a lifers cell… Its all fantasy.

John

It wouldn’t work, the inmate, with hours to contemplate his fate would soon figure out that this pill was a weapon he could use against another inmate, warden, or pass on to a family member when they visit for use in another murder. It would be easy to substitute the pill with say a smartie, m&m, viagra etc then spirit said lethal pill away.

What you could do however, is wire the door lock to the mains, so when scroat decides to remove pill…………….:D

Do your own homework. You could begin with all the usual sources of information on these matters. Few know the truth or, if they do will admit to it

Rates of crime are certainly declining. We know that because the police tell us.

The police? Or government statistics? Or the insurance companies?

Figures please, from official sources.

It was really too much to expect that you would grasp the central point that I was makng with, I add, some extreme blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah…zzz.

And to make your point you jumped on one of your favourite hobby horses, but neglected to get the point right by making a gross error.
Fine, you made some stupid point with your schoolboy quip about poison pills for lifers. You must be really proud. But you displayed your ignorance and that just showed how much you knew or cared; in the future you might make a similar remark but we should take care in case you really couldn’t be bothered to check your facts again.

And don’t try to turn your reply around to have a stab at liberal left against poison pills – no one has said any thing against your proposal on the forum. The rest of us are probably sitting at home, laughing our heads off. Why not propose that they should be trampled to death by unicorns whilst you’re at it – that will be just as likely to happen and deep in your heart you know it.
