Why did the Rotodyne project fail??

I was wondering why the Westland Rotodyne project failed. It seemed quite an interesting project…and also the prototype prooved itself. I found lack of funds stopped the project…but also it said the british government accepted it, but then withdrew from the project. Can any one shine a light on this….
