Why don’t charter airlines operate domestic flights (from and to UK destinations)? Surely an airline as big as Monarch for example, could easily compete with other airlines operating domestic routes? Just curious

What travel companies still use Monarch?
During the summer, I think Cosmos is one of (if not the biggest!) customers of Monarch, but not sure about the winter season.

Yes, once upon a time they did. They were an IATA member too in the days when you had to be a scheduled airline to get past the bouncers on the door. Late 80s/early 90s.

They do operate domestically, all be it operating positioning flights.
It would be a waste of time for charter companies to operate domestic, because as someone has said most of there aircraft is filled up with Package holiday seats, with about 20% (if not less) of the aircrafts seats, for the DIY holiday person.
And one other thing. They would actually say it is a waste of aircraft utilization. Why send an A320 down to like London and back (which takes 3 hours including turn around or there about‘s) when it can do a Palma for Example and make a better profit margin for the company.

Britannia used o fly from Belfast to Heathrow at one time. Most of the so-called charter airlines sell the majority of their seats to package holiday companies so it gives them guaranteed and predictable income. Their would be less predictability if they operated ‘normal services’
