A friend of mine has just asked me why vintage aircraft are covered in Irish Linen as opposed to any other fabric, and I have to confess I don’t know the answer.
I’d guess it’s down to strength and durability, but can anyone enlighten me as to exactly how and why Irish Linen came to be the fabric of choice for the discerning aeroplane coverer?

You would be better off saying ‘recovered’ or ‘has new fabric’. Anything else is pure fabrication by some dope!
So, what about Ceconite? Is its application ceconisation?

Sorry Steve,
The correct spelling of re-fabr… is a trade secret handed down from father to son (and back again when Clive forgets) among those allowed into the secret conclave of those who know how to sniff the dope when hidden in a good quality spray-bake facility…
Heh.
Sorry.
Cheers!

Bograt – yes, that’s always confused me too. Would love to know the gramatically correct answer to that one.
Thanks for the replies guys, it’s always good to learn from others.
Stormin’s got a good point. What can you tell us Glenn….? 😉

A related question – suppose you re-fabric an aeroplane, and it is subsequently advertised for sale – would you describe it as ‘re-fabriced’ or ‘re-fabricked’???
Always wondered about that one!!!

I am guessing but, early days they used Irish linen, Dacron etc were natural based fabrics and hence shrunk with dope. later on man made fibres such as Ceconite and Stitz etc (polyester fibres) are heat shrunk then built up with dope coats Ceconite etc is probably at least half the price of linen so Irish linen is normally used for originality purposes. Not normally a good idea to cover wooden structures with Ceconite,

This should go some way in explaining it, add some dope, get high in applying it and patch it with crimping scissors when it needs doing again
