Can the webmaster explain why we need 7 stickies at the top of the page?
A couple of them are nearly four months old and are nothing more than book / magazine adverts. One or two urgent messages are all that are necessary.

I think that the problem with the stickies is that a quick flick into the forum does not indicate new postings because the stickies are all you see.
The menu option ‘New Posts’ might help with this problem

I think that the problem with the stickies is that a quick flick into the forum does not indicate new postings because the stickies are all you see. This is especially the case if you are using a widescreen laptop.
I accept the reasoning behind the stickies however the logic is flawed when they are perceived by the customer as an irritant. They also seem to have an extremely long shelf life.
Maybe a single sticky thread to which the posts, which are at present individual threads in effect, are added would be better then we could read/ignore them at our peril. This is a solution used elsewher eon the net.

Can I suggest that you keep it as a sticky for a little bit longer than a week, so that Tracey can confirm the date and everyone attending is able to view without too much hassle.
Agree wholly with your sentiment but disagree about method.
It is actually far more noticeable if it pops up to the top once the date is confirmed. Immediately obvious to everyone.
It can then be re-stickied.

It will shortly revert to a normal post. However as things are happening, in terms of date fixing, it will keep bobbing up.

Personally i don’t mind them at all, i just ignore them, it’s no big deal. A few posts at the top of the page that i won’t read is a tiny price to pay for such a good forum.

It would be very nice if the viewing experience could be personalised so that only those stickies relevant to the viewer appeared as each of us logged on.
It isn’t that sophisticated. So they all appear to everybody.
I checked the stickies and each has some current relevance to somebody who may log on, or is there to assist in the commercial objectives of Key. Some can actually save the reader money.
Outdated stickies have, in my experience, been removed very promptly.
Other sites may do it differently.

but facing responses like ‘is it too dificult to scroll down’ are counter productive.
well is it?
It is a perfectly question, i have a scroll wheel thing (if thats what they are called) and it hardly takes a second to bypass the stickies.

and honestly, I dont mind paying a subscription via paypal.. if that gets the board rid of all the ads and stickies 😉

Ofcourse everyone appreciates that the forum is free, keymags pay for it etc etc etc..
But I am on the side of the OP. (Original Poster). So many stickies are not really needed. Its accepted practice all over the internet that if the announcements and stickies are more than four, then they are a distraction. I have not found any such boards as on date which i frequent.
the OP was just giving suggestions to improve the board . Its upto the webbie and mods to take the suggestion in the right spirit, but facing responses like ‘are you payihg for it?’ ‘is it too dificult to scroll down’ are counter productive.

how much effort does it take to scroll down a couple of inches? 🙂

Yes time to clean house onthe stickies I think. The only two that should stay are the code of conduct and the nice one from Steves ex and Son
The one from Steve’s Ex was one I made sticky for a week, and then only once it had started to drop onto the second page. It will shortly revert to a normal post. However as things are happening, in terms of date fixing, it will keep bobbing up.
The other stickies ‘pay’ for your Forum.
Would you prefer a PayPal subscription system? Say the word and it could doubtless be orgainised.

Thanks Kev, you put it so eloquently.
It must be a slow news day, so lets revive the sticky thread, once again !!!!

Not the webmaster but here’s my two penn’orth.
These fora are provided free of charge. You don’t have to subscribe to any of Key’s Publications or even be a casual purchaser to enjoy these fora. Therefore, I personally feel it churlish of us to whinge about the stickies which are mostly advertising their own products or the services of someone who is an advertiser.
The Code of Conduct will be staying there and the webmaster and moderation team allow other important notices to be made sticky. If they’re not of interest, don’t open them.
Or we could remove them all and replace them with the almost ever present “Will it be at Legends?” or “What’s in the container?” threads.
Regards,
