Why the Vigilante was never a resounding success?

Why did the A-5 Vigilante never amount to anything else beyond a marginal carrier-based nuclear bomber and a passable reconaissansse platform? Why wasn’t it used as a ground based aircraft? In what other function could NA have intended it to be used?
