Why was R-27 family such a failure?

Question is self-explanatory. Real world performance of the R-27 family was absolutely dismal. R-27T used R-73 seeker technology and failed to perform. Why was the R-27 family such a failure?

Misuse is the most common cause of failure in high tech systems, with a limited number of engagements the problem can be as simple as inflight wear and tear of the missiles or lack of proper storage.

Ok? And?

It was operated by airforces that were very rag-tag compared to the USAF.

Not to mention there were FAR fewer launches as well.

Same reason Sparrow failed badly in Vietnam?

There is a whole battery of reasons why the R-27 did not work well in Africa, one that could be applied to a whole bunch of AAMs.
