Why was there never a three-engined fighter ???

I have a maybe silly question !!

Why was there never a suggestion for a three-engined fighter ??? :confused: I only remember the once proposed Fighter-development of the Vigilante specified to NR-349 (see below) ….

Wouldn’t be a fighter with three F404 or F414 engines (3x 97 kN = 291 kN) be in the class of the twin engined F100/110 engined fighters (2x 129 kN = 258 kN) ??? … I don’t have any information regarding prizes of these engines and so on … but just as a “what-if”-question !!
