Why we are interested in aviation

Ive just looked at the P51 accident thread and then the CNN web site and naturally pass on my thoughts to all those concerned.

What makes me think however is this, when i go to work on Monday ill be told be numerous people about the crash as if they find glee in telling me. I can dismiss this as the “ill informed” and usually ignore them. I usually find that if you have to explain about your interests then your wasting your time.

This leads me to think why i get up at 05.00hrs to go to Duxford, Fairford, Waddington etc. What do i get out of doing this, is it the pure pleasure of listening to merlins on mass or is it the danger element? I certainly stand in places that i shouldnt at times. I can not give reasons for doing this but i do…..and regularly.

What do you get from our hobby/interests and why do you keep doing it?

Got to go now, off to the proms at Weston Park and wait for Charlie Brown to come over in the Spit. (Which i chased to Malta a couple of years ago).

Your thoughts now……………………………..

Hmmmm Merlins…

The sound, the history, the form of the aircraft in flight. The added joy is designing and building each individual part knowing one day that it will be part of something magical when complete.
Heaven is 46 inches of Mercury,2700rpm and 400 knots at 200 feet.:D

I for one just love to see warbirds in there natural element.

I,m like a ten year old boy when i,m at legends!,

However i only go to see flying,i don,t go for danger or thrills,i was at duxford in 96 and again in 03,and i have seen first hand how awful it is when things go wrong.

it,s deeply saddening when someone loses there life doing something for entertainment.

But remember life is for living and sometimes its cruel, but overall the guys who fly these things know what there doing and more importantly why, they also know the risks, and i,ll bet if asked would,nt change a thing about there hobby!

Because like me they love these machines, may flying go on forever!

Being in the airline industry, my interest is purely technical now. If I can understand WHY parts are built in a particular fashion, then perhaps I can understand the modern picture a little better.

As an enthusiast, the smells and sounds of the classic aircraft are wonderful…. ‘Eu de Old Aeroplane’ should be bottled…, and you can’t beat a merlin on full chat….

I enjoy the sounds the smells. I enjoy the history behind the machines. I like the fact that men and women have spent many thousands of hours rebuilding the aeroplanes for our enjoyment. I also enjoy the technical side of things, i like finding out why things do what.

Seeing a Spitfire fly by you with all its history, all its speed and all its glory is art. Art in its most beatiful form created by the human kind.

Their is no greater feeling (besides flying itself) then sitting on the wing with a beer, talking to some friends after a day of working on an aircraft. Or taking a nap on the wing with your head resting on the intake:D I couldn’t care less about airshows, but things like the above make it worthwhile for me to get out of bed before sunrise.
