Just out of curiosity – will Canda actually replace their F/A-18’s with a new combat aircraft in 2020 or is there a possibility that it will scrap its airdefence componnent?
Though 2020 looks like a long way off, defence programs on this scale are usually commenced a decade before the equipment actually enters service (look at South Africa’s Gripen purchase).
Canda’s military has been in a slow decline since the 1960’s. They don’t have any real threats (in fact I once heard that a Canadian defence report said that the US is the largest threat :P).
Canada does participate in Coalition forces, but given the current debacle in Iraq, how willing will Canada (and other NATO allies) be to participate in such actions.
So by this analysis, would it be possible for Canada not to replace its F/A-18’s?
