Will the Olympics affect airshows?

In some circles this has been rumbling around since last year – recently the ‘restrictions’ being discussed seem to have become more formalised and seems to have progressed to silly proportions.

Read about them here http://olympics.airspacesafety.com

Given the number of airshows covered by the zones currently marked out, I wonder if we’re going to get any at Old Warden, Duxford etc etc etc from the end of June through to September!

Seems you cannot even fly a model aircraft during that time as well!

If you think these restrictions are silly (and they are), you should have seen what the maniacs originally proposed (larger in geography and twice as large in time). Only a lot of work by AOPA, CAA and RAF got it down to what it is now.

As for airshow organisers, if anyone in SE England flies and does not already know about this then they really should not be involved in aviating at all.

Probably the same maniacs who decide on airport security in general, which IMO is mostly hysterical nonsense.

As the consultation and planning of the airspace restrictions has been going on for well over a year now, you can rest assured that those at airfields thus affected are VERY aware of them!

I was the person who wrote the articles which appeared in A…plane magazine and as chairman of the Vintage Aircraft Club canconfirm there have been plenty of discussions and communication programmes. Yes there is going to be some significant restriction of flying, particularly in the area around London during the period 14 July to 15 August, while a separate, smaller airspace restriction will cover the Paralympic Games from 16 August to 12 September.

Most air show organisers have adjusted their dates, both to accommodate this and a couple of air shows have been rescheduled because many Police and other emergency and ground-based services will be deployed elsewhere in July and August.

Meanwhile there is there is also a capacity entry for the Vintage Glider Club Olympian gliding event which will be held at Long Mynd from July 14-21st as part of the 126th running of the Wenlock Olympian Games, which founded in 1850 is in fact the original modern Olympics!

The main class is open to variants of the “Olympia” glider, which had war not intervened was set to be the single type flown to ensure parity between competitors in the 1940 Olympic Games in Finland, when gliding and aerobatics were due to become Olympic sports!

Headcorn will not be subject to Olympic Airspace Restrictions from 14 July 2012 to 15 August 2012. We are within three nautical miles of the outer edge of the Restricted Zone and will have an exemption which means that we will be fully operational during the restricted period.

Does this exemption cover you for displays as well as transits in/out of the restricted area?

Both Damyns Hall and Headcorn have displays during the Olympic restrictions, I’m not sure how they powers that be will view this, bearing in mind a Mode C transponder and a flight plan are required…..Hassle at the very least for display pilots..

I’m going on holiday:D
