Wiltshire Me Bf 109 crash mystery. Help please!

Hi all

I’m helping an elderly man write his reminisces of his childhood evacuation to Pitton in Wiltshire, where he stayed at Willow Cottage, Whittocks Farm. Presumably here he witnessed a Me Bf 109 crash and drew a picture of it. The picture appears to show an emblem of a dog on a shield. The tailplanes have supporting struts.

I assume the pilot survived because the internet is a comprehensive source when it comes to fatalities.

Any suggestions about uncovering this incident will be most welcome.

Thanks in anticipation

Rogier

Just spoke to the compiler of the publication and he assures me the drawing has not been reversed. (the swastika raised my suspicion) Someone else who talked to the gentleman is also under the impression that the crash was on White Hill, Wiltshire.

Thanks everyone for your contributions.

If that drawing is reversed could the wing cannon be the pitot head? Not sure of it’s position on a 109, just a thought.

Good spot otis. So we are looking at a good match for a mirror image of the Bischoff’s 109E as all the details in the drawing are there in the photo….just in reverse. Except, that is, for the wing cannon.

The other nice extra detail which caught my eye is the air intake/filter on the starboard side – just below and ahead of the cockpit. These were only on the port side – again see post #18. Another suggestion that a photo has been used to add detail to the scene he witnessed?

Have we missed a trick? Thus it may not have crashed there…but it may have been “displayed ” there on a War Bond tour.

Does Picton have a local paper that goes back to 1940 ?

I suppose it is possible that the drawing was done after the event with some sort of reference, which may have added details not completely relevant to the actual aircraft. Therefore, I imagine that we could still be looking for a 109E of any sub variant from E-1 to E-4

I have a photo of a crashed 312 Squadron Spitfire LF Mk IXc and because of the force of the impact, there is a hole where the cannon should be. I might be wrong of course and the station armourers got there before the photographer! Pilot survived.
Good observation nevertheless.

The earlier E model did not have the wing cannons ( just wing mgs ). E3 and E4 had the protruding wing cannon. I don’t see them in the crashed one in post #18, which appears to have just the hole for the hidden wing machine-gun.

There was aircraft recognition books readily available. Even my dad owned one, which I now posess. So probably a combination of both. Another question to ask him.
What I find perplexing is the lack of camouflage netting because neither side wanted their a/c in enemy possession.

What significance the wing cannons? Everything is in accordance with a Me Bf 109E

I am struck by the cowling detail on the 109. Could a child have re-created that from memory? Was the drawing done later at the scene of the crash or did he use a different photo image later as a reference? No large letters, numbers or symbols on the a/c in the painting. Also noticing the wing cannons.

Versuch;

Did wonder myself if we could be looking at the black cat emblem too. Either way, it looks as though we’re searching for a JG 52 aircraft.

Time to put the Cat among the Messerschmitts.

27 Sep 1940 ,4/JG52 Fw.Franz Bogasch, White 5 (some sources quote White 4) , Crashed St Nicholas at Wade.

Note the location of the “Shield” and cats tail, very similar to the drawing.

This is the one that caught my eye. 24th August 1940, Minster Road, Westgate, Kent. Bf-109E-1 “White 9” of Herbert Bischoff. Made a successful crash landing, but struck an electricity pylon on the way down and took off a chunk of his wing. It just looks a bit like the aircraft in the drawing to me.

“have you been to Kent in 1940?” might suffice;)

I would have to dive back into the books later on to find out, but I’ll post here as soon as I have the answer.

Where is it? I can simply ask him if he ever visited such-and-such place in 1940.

Thanks! That would be a big help. It just got me thinking after browsing the crash archive books. There’s a photo in there of a crash landed Bf-109E of JG 52 which has a chunk of wingtip missing that doesn’t look too dissimilar to the drawing…just a different area. It got me wondering if the location could have been confused.

Thanks RAFRochford, thanks Ian. I’m beginning to think the elderly gentleman is confusing two seperate events. I’ll do my best to make sure his drawring is not attributed to Wiltshire.

RAF Rochford beat me to it. I’d got as far as Volume 9, but likewise couldn’t see a match.
But if a 109E (tailplane struts), presumably must’ve been no later than ’41, wherever the location was.
