[updated:LAST EDITED ON 26-08-02 AT 09:25Â AM (GMT)]We all know it, Windows XP sucks bigtime! But today I encountered another problem. I wanted to install my new account for home banking. When I tried to do so, IE6 said I needed to install Java Virtual Machine. MS says it will not install it anymore. I tried to look it up somewhere else, but impossible to download it. It has something to do with a lawsuit between MS and Sun, the makers of Java.
All nice and well, but now I can’t go to my bank account thanks to this shitty program.
Anyone with XP has familiar problems?
Can somebody find out wheter they have the same problems on the KBC-site?

It says “error on page” CRAP

RE: Windows XP
It would have been 3 months if: we haven’t had 2 power cut-offs, and If I wouldn’t have had the need to move the server… But, that’s life. And the one of the Unix servers have a smaller uptime, due to a kernel panic 🙂

I bet you’re wondering how much longer before you have to reboot. 22 days without rebooting for W2K is very very good. OTOH 220+ days without rebooting for a *nix server is considered average. 😀
cheers.

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 27-08-02 AT 06:36Â PM (GMT)]Primer- A rule of thumb about microsoft, is if they give something away, its to get you to use it (get stuck with their standard). The .NET thing was originally a MS plan to takeover the internet and software development. Thankfully its a flop. If there giving you source code, its with the hidden agenda that by letting you steal it, youll be living your life according to MS.
frank-Must you use words like “skins”. Theres nothing more cornball than MS buzzwords.

RE: Windows XP
I was just reading a newspaper published by a private fund for enginnering which is located inside the university where I study (which is public) when I found something relative to Windows’ source codes.
PS.: for those who dont know I live in Brazil.
According to it, in August 2001, Microsoft’s CEO, Steve Ballner, during a visit to Brazil said to our president, Fernando Henrique Cardoso, that Microsoft would open Windows’ sources codes to Brazilian universitys. In May, Microsoft announced that Brazilians academic researchers would have acess to .NET plataform source codes. Over a milion lines from the codes would be avaliable due a “Shared Source license program”. This license allows to see the codes, but not modify them.
Well, this a beginning, right?
P.S.: I hope you guys can understand my translation. 😉

RE: Windows XP
Does this mean that if you shut down your PC as often as you shut down yourself, which means at the end of the day, you´ll be OK with WinXp?
Anyone know when Sp1 for WinXp is due?

RE: Windows XP
Let me give you some figures.
I work with both win2k and Unix right now. I worked in the past with w95 and NT4.
With 95 and NT4 I was rebooting my machine 5 times a day.
Win win2k , let’s say once every 2 days.
with Unix ….. twice a year !!!!

When I heat that word, I fell like I want to kill penguins! 😉
Yeah, the system is good, when used as firewall 🙂

I definitely share your point of view. I’m working with those stuff and win2k is definitely the best …. ooops the less bad!!!!
God bless Linux

RE: Windows XP
Yep I know about VMS. And I’d really like Microsoft to “steal” anothe idea: the versionning “Ã la” VMS. That would definitely be an improvement (no need to install 3rd party tools, etc.)
And you are right about tne no improvement of XP over 2k. It’s just a skin, after all 🙂

RE: Windows XP
Frank- VMS was designed by the same guy who designed NT, David Cutler. Id be curious to know how much Bill payed him to do that considering the NT kernal is MSs bread and butter. I dont think XP is an improvement over win2K. When the compatability source code is released, there will finally be some competition for windows…oh happy day.

RE: Windows XP
Don’t think I’m a Micro$oft defender, but… hava a look under the Hood of both systems:
95, 98, 98SE, Me are MS-DOS. Just a “nice” GUI on it, but it IS DOS, and they can’t correctly handle Multi process work (the base of Windows programs). It is also an hybrid 16bit / 32 bit system
NT4 is a pro system, but now obsolete
2000 is NT5, and as NT4, can handle Multi Thread, Multi Process and is really good at it, and separate memort realms for each programs (what 9x hasn’t and makes your programs crash). It is a 32 bit system (a 64 bit is also there for big servers)
XP IS NT5.1 so, IS Win2000 with a nicer GUI, some parameters to make older DOS and 9x era programs work better.
If you can run something on 2000, you can do the same on XP. Just turn off the new start bar, and some graphical gadgets thar are more annoying than useful.
Since Win2000, Microsoft have developped a good OS, maybe not as good as Unix or VMS, but…
Btw, it is possible that some games won’t run on W2000 / XP because of the separated memory realms, and other programming tricks that are now forbidden in these systems. If the soft was writtes cleanly, it will run.

RE: Windows XP
I’m not even beginning at XP, 98 SE runns perfect without any major errors.
The only thing I want to to with Windows is to open them.
Sometimes to throw the dam thing out!!!
I cant wait until the source code is on the market and an other firm can make something better.
Until than where under the dictatorship of Bill Gates!!!!

RE: Windows XP
Microsoft keep playing silly buggers with the Java VM machine.
Its all to do with their squabbles with Sun Microsystems.
I belive you can still find it in the bowles of the MS download site, if you do need it, i have a copy on my system just let me know.
Alternativly try Suns VM Machine
