Thank you for posting that David – nice to see that the local paper was ahead of the nationals for the Wing Commander, which makes a change!

That’s very sad news indeed.
Very sad to hear about his passing.

I’m pleased to have been of some assistance.

His name had cropped up several times in the last few years in the local press, but I never had the privilege of meeting him.

He was one of the people that I tried to establish contact with the other year on behalf of the BBC, when they were putting together the TV news items on the first Thousand Bomber Raid and subsequently the Bomber Command Memorial Dedication.

Jim was commissioned and climbed rapidly through the junior officer ranks. He commanded 50 Squadron in 1944-45 and rose to the rank of wing-commander.

Thanks for posting the link TO23.

I did not realise it but reading this quote from the Nottingham Post, I have had a photo of him (and the rest of the aircrew of 50 Sqn.) hanging on my wall for the last twenty odd years!

Taken in March 1945 and he is instantly recognisable, with the same “operational” moustache as in the photo of him with PA474.

God bless him.
