I recently won a double pass to Sunday at the Wings Over Wairarapa airshow, which was my first airshow 20 years ago. I asked the organisers and I was able to take my 12yo nephew with me for his first airshow.
Then they announced the USAF would send a B-52 from Guam for a flyover…on Saturday. The organisers were kind enough to change our tickets to Saturday so we could witness the first ever BUFF visit to New Zealand. And just before it arrived the commentators said the B-52 had enough gas for three passes.
We had a fantastic day and my nephew loved it, except it was HOT!
Unfortunately that evening new COVID cases were identified which meant changes to our alert level and cancellation of the Sunday airshow. Awful news as they’d put on an amazing display with record crowds and I’ve no doubt yesterday would have been as successful.
Here’s some photos! Feel free to ask if you have any questions.

K5054NZ, re. Jodel, you have good taste. A very underrated aeroplane.

That’s a lovely, striking scheme on the Beech. Thanks very much, Errol.
K5054NZ – agreed re. the Jodel. It’s great to see that shot as small. civil aircraft are usually over-looked when there are so many other types around.

Unfortunately I didn’t get a photo of the Beech, so thank you Errol!
Where were the people? Mostly standing in front of my nephew and I! There were several displays I didn’t photograph thanks to people standing in front of us, and navigating the “foodcourt” area at lunchtime was a nightmare. The commentary team mentioned there were record crowds and I believe it.
Re: the Jodel, if there’s a D.11 on display at an airshow I always take a photo as I quite like them.
The programme had fantastic variety, the organising team did a fantastic job. I have no doubt Sunday would’ve been another great day had the COVID alert level not changed.

It’s Beech D18S Ten-Two N43927. Below at Omaka, where it has been used in true-to-life drug-running demo theatre displays.

Beautiful photos! Thanks for posting them, K5054NZ. Great to see a variety of aircraft and in such a lovely setting.
In a couple of your photos there’s a glimpse of something (Beech 18?) in a nice blue and yellow scheme. Did you get a pic by any chance?

Great set of photos and quite a varied line up too by the look of it.
As said PropStrike and Sopwith have said, lucky to get your tickets swapped and how unfortunate for the organisers to loose the Sunday.
Thanks for sharing them.

Looks a great show, you were lucky that your tickets were changed to Saturday. I feel sorry for the organisers that the Sunday was cancelled, all that work put into it, but better to be safe.
Nice pictures, good to see you have a Jodel included amongst them. Great variety of participants too.

Looks great ! Very jealous, but where are the people? Hardly anyone there….
Such a shame that Sunday was scrubbed
